Ah yes, I forgot that it s the governments responsibilty to help those who have haven t helped themselves.

This from someone who gets an allowance from mommy and daddy.

For the record, Ian, there are lots of people in this country who work much harder than you ever will---and live near, below, or at the poverty line. Take a look at many family farmers today; many are one bad season away from losing everything. And indeed there are folks who can't or won't work; some of these folks have kids who will be raised in poverty through no fault of their own.

I realize it's pretty easy for you to live off mom and dad's largesse and sneer at those who are less fortunate. But understand this: it can happen to you or your parents.

Congress "investigates" a lot of lot of things. And by investigates, I mean they say they will look into it and never do.

"solved poverty"

Ah yes, I forgot that it's the governments responsibilty to help those who have haven't helped themselves.

Maybe Barton wants to prevent the inevitable gagging that tU does every year by sending them to the Cotton Bowl against some 3rd-place ham-and-egger from the SEC, instead of USC.

After Juan Seguin led a successful revolution against Mexico..and unlike the white Texans..did not suffer an ignominious defeat like the Alamo...the Texans turned on the Tejano hispanics and created the Republic of TExas...then they begged to become part of the USA. IS there anyway we can give Texas back to Mexico and free ourselves of these knuckleheads? .

I demand congressional hearings to investigate the Designated Hitter rule.

This sounds a lot like some dark-side "populist" pandering. The senator probably believes that his posturing will get voters to think, "Wow! I argue about Bowl games all the time with my friends at the bar! This senator has opinions about the same things I do! He's really on our side!"

Next, we can look forward to the "Hey You Damn Kids, Get Off My Lawn! Act of 2006"

Barton is a Texas Republican, emphasis on the "Texas." Football, especially college football, is really big in them parts. Barton is just trying to pander to the rubes in his constituency. I mean, why focus on the failings of your fake Texan, dude ranch President when you can focus on Football?

A similar thing just went >splat here in Illinois, when our Democratic governor, Rod Blagojevich, spearheaded an attempt to get our Democratic-led state congress to ban 'violent video games'. Well, a federal judge just ruled that the gov's new law is unconstitutional, and I couldn't be more pleased. Hey, Rod, don't you have more important things to worry about than trying to do parents' jobs for them?

I guess it proves that Republicans don't own exclusive rights to the Moralistic Nanny State.

Congress has investigated everything from apples to zygotes, but now they've gone too far! They want to investigate "foozball". There's no investigating in "foozball."

But if the Republicans had a football team...

Because the media eats this shit up.

Scandal + Stars = Tons of national media exposure for egotistical politicians.

Alas, the inventor of this vile formula was... Senator Al Gore.

Sex! Rock lyrics! Stars! Scandal!

Of course, Ken Starr discovered that the Preznit himself is a celebrity and a sex scandal involving him is pretty much a Perfect Game. Since then it's been slimmer pickings.

Martha Stewart.

Then we had the non-existent baseball "scandal". Now the college football "scandal".

When the media get really desperate, they'll accept a scandal from someone who isn't even a celebrity, thus turning them *into* a celebrity: Terri Schiavo, Elian Gonzales, Runaway Bride, some-random-white-woman, etc.

I'd expect them to go after Hollywood stars next. Dunno what for. Maybe a collagen scandal!

"CONGRESS INVESTIGATES PLASTIC SURGERY ABUSE IN MOVIE INDUSTRY!!!"

All to distract us from a lying and thieving administration and its Corporate Overlords (who are immune to having to testify under oath, of course).

I fail to see the educational mission that wold be fulfilled by a playoff system or the bowl system.

Maybe Congressman Barton can work on ending big-time college athletics. I mean, heck, my alma mater (Wisconsin) does pretty well... But it's not like we need to know who the best non-pprodessional team in the nation is, nor any reason why this should be done by attaching this poison to colleges and universities.

Interestingly, if you look at his comment form, you asked to choose from a menu of relevant topics. I don't see college athletics as being in the Congressman's purview.

Did his team fail to make it to a bowl game or what? I'm not sure this is the biggest waste of time, but it ranks up there.

I agree with you Oliver. Out of all of the things out there that we could be devoting time and energy toward, I would think that something that relates to college football would be a lot lower on the totem pole than this. I am not sure what the controversy is, or what the immediate impact that a " corrupt" BCS would have on America, but there are many flaws in a myriad of other places that are "deeply flawed". I think we should attend to those first.

Oliver, didn't you hear that we have solved all the other big problems of the modern world, and thus the best use of our congressmen became to fret about college football?
