Not a slimy individual. Don’t jump to conclusions without knowing the facts. I voted for the man. There were many stories shortly after Reagan’s term that speculated he may have had the beginning stages of Alzheimers, do some research. Remember, he stated himself, he could not remember many of the different things he authorized related to Iran Contra.
In 1984 Reagan announced he would run for a second term in New Jersey in front of the Statue of Liberty referencing Springsteen, his music and his ideals. He was enormously popular at this time. This was shortly after a Goerge Will piece five days earlier that bashed American workers and their “slipshod products”, because they don’t work as hard as Springsteen does.
The very same year Chrysler offered Sprinsteen $12 million to use Born in the USA in a commercial; he turned them down.
As for the limos, I’ll toss my hat with the ones that at least try and improve the lives of those that sweat and toil to provide the rich folks the means to ride around in those limos. They try to give a little back rather than just telling them to screw off.

I never heard any such thing about that song. I never heard that Reagan asked to use it, and I never heard that Springsteen didn’t allow the “commercialization of his music.”

Suggesting that Reagan had alzheimer’s while he was in office, does tell me that you are one slimy individual…

I hope your question about “limousine liberals” was rhetorical, because the answer is very well known. Of course, there are a lot more limos on the rightie side, but on the rightie side, there’s not a whole lot of b.s. about empathizing with and identifying with the poor, while riding around in those limos.

Springsteen did not let Reagan use “Born in the USA” just as he did not let Kerry use any of his songs, nor will you hear them on a commercial. Springsteen does not allow the commercialization of his music, never has, never will. The fact that Reagan asked him was a pretty good indication of exactly how out of touch he was; Alzheimers ? The song is about how poorly we treat Veterans…period. And what would any of us do with the money he has made, derived from his success? I think the guy lives pretty modestly. And why is it when a Liberal is successful, not that Springsteen is Liberal, the Radical Rightwingers call them “Limousine Liberals”? I’d be willing to bet there are A LOT more limos on the righties side; I guess they are not aware that George Jr. was “Born in the Black Limo”.

I never understood why Reagan used “Born in the USA”, because, apart from it’s catchy chorus, it’s fairly scathing about living there.
I think I would rather hear from someone who has been poor and now rides in a limo, that someone whose daddy, granddaddy and great granddaddy all rode in one.

Sundown, you don’t know me. So don’t be such an asshat to think the reason I don’t like Bruce Springsteen is because of his politics. You have JD the retard getting at me about Bon Jovi, whose lead singer Jon, had his lips so firmly planted on John Kerry’s ass last year, that I’m certain surgery required their removal.

As for the ‘limousine liberal’ thing, I think it has more to do with the fact that so many of these artists talk up the whole “little guy” angle, when they themselves can no longer relate. Guys like Springsteen and Michael Moore act as advocates for the common man and look the part. They wear jeans, trucker hats, t-shirts, etc. But they also reside in million dollar homes and apartments, and have a chorus of people working for them around the clock. I don’t begrudge them for that. They worked for it and more power to them. But they no longer live in the world of the “common man” and as such, it lacks authenticity to hear them (I shouldn’t really put this on Springsteen as his advocacy last year had more to with opposition to the war) telling people like me that I don’t ‘need’ a reduction in my income taxes.

I think if more artists followed the example set by Bono, we’d all be better off.

Exactly. Were people getting all angry at the Allman Brothers for supporting Carter? I doubt it (thought maybe that was, or still is, the case). Yet, nowadays any time a musician has an opinion, they are shouted down as a “Limosine liberal”.

sooperedd: the first time Springsteen delved into politics, as I mentioned above, was when Reagan was using “Born In The USA” as a theme song, and Bruce came out and made a specific statement to the effect that he didn’t support Reagan.

Sundown: What a bunch of crap! The greatest rock band of all time was, and is, the Allman Brothers Band. The last time I heard of them being involved in politics, they supported Jimmuh Cartuh.

I forgave them for that.

Springsteen writes songs about the average American; if anyone listened to his entire body of work it is fairly obvious. He has his pop songs, but those are not the songs that define him or his music. This last election was the FIRST time he had ever delved into politics, for good reason. He is anything but a “Hollywood Elitist”, far from it. I get the vibe that most of those that have posted in this thread have not really listened to much of his other stuff.

You must have some kind of special mental retardation. You’re the only person I’ve ever seen that would actually describe being a fan of a particular band as a character flaw. The mind boggles.

From about 1975-85. But then you always do miss a lot.

Your knowledge of most subjects is either poor and/or misinformed. Now we know your knowledge of music is the same. ‘Born To Run’ and ‘Born In The USA’ were the successful bookends to a 10 year stretch where he was pretty much forgotten, save for his core fan base after 1977. He certainly was not “the gold standard” of that era. The standard throughout the 70’s was easily The Eagles, who were able to fuse several varieties of music and sell millions of records, even into the late 70’s when the punk/new wave era was taking the country by storm.

Springsteen never didn’t suck. Pardon the unwieldy syntax, but I never liked him. He was hardly “the gold standard” for US rock. I remember that for nearly a decade, he monopolized the airwaves on WNEW – FM, and hearing him over and over again sickened me.

If Senator Frist is aggravated because M’sieu Springsteen took time out to say, “I’m not supporting Ronald Reagan,” when Reagan attempted to associate himself with “Born In The USA” (which, of course, he was), then good for him. If the Senator is aggravated because M’sieu Springsteen worked for M’sieu Kerry in 2004, then good for him. If the Senator is opposed to M’sieu Sprinsteen’s resolution because he’s just another left – wing assh*le celebrity, then great!
