Right Wing Pretzel Logic

The GOP is going to try and beat back the growing consensus that they cooked the books on Iraq’s capabilities, not with truthtelling but with a tv commercial (they really must think this is a campaign). A commercial starring their new hero, Bill Clinton. In the last week, have you ever seen so many Republicans tout the word of Democrats like Clinton, Kerry, Edwards, and Kennedy with such reverence?

One Response to “Right Wing Pretzel Logic”

In typical fashion, Newsmax chooses its quotes very carefully.

They’re quick to quote this from Clinton’s February, 1998 speech:

“Let’s imagine the future,” Clinton said seven years ago. “What if [Saddam] fails to comply [with U.N. sanctions], and we fail to act, or we take some ambiguous third route which gives him yet more opportunities to develop this program of weapons of mass destruction and continue to press for the release of the sanctions and continue to ignore the solemn commitments that he made?”

Clinton warned: “He will conclude that the international community has lost its will. He will then conclude that he can go right on and do more to rebuild an arsenal of devastating destruction.

“And some day, some way, I guarantee you, he’ll use the arsenal.”

But they neglect to include this:

But Saddam Hussein could end this crisis tomorrow simply by letting the weapons inspectors complete their mission. He made a solemn commitment to the international community to do that and to give up his weapons of mass destruction a long time ago now. One way or the other, we are determined to see that he makes good on his own promise.

In the speech Newsmax quotes, Clinton’s goal was to get UNSCOM inspectors back into the country.

George Bush actually succeeded at getting the inspectors back in.

    Then he ignored them.
