Michael Steele’s big problem is that he is simply out of touch with Maryland’s mainstream values. His choice of friends continues to make it crystal clear
Maryland Republican officials confirmed yesterday that President Bush will host a fundraising luncheon for Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele this month — the latest high-profile embrace by national GOP luminaries of Steele’s U.S. Senate bid.
…
“The Bush agenda is anathema to Maryland,” said Derek Walker, a spokesman for the Maryland Democratic Party.
“Michael Steele has to choose between two diametric opposites: President Bush and the best interests of the people of Maryland.”
Michael Steele is just another right-wing Republican (he’s already trying to pretend he isn’t a Republican) lackey of George W. Bush, far outside the mainstream of Maryland values. We don’t want a “yes” man that will just rubber stamp the Republican agenda, we want someone who will fight hard for Maryland’s values.
Please take pictures, and video. LOL.

That’s right: we want “yes” men that will just rubber stamp the Democratic agenda … whatever that is.
Hey, I understand you’re sowing your oats and gloating and having some fun after those two overwhelming victories on Tuesday–where one very blue state elected a Democratic governor, and another state voted to have a Democratic governor succeed another Democratic governor–but had Steele said that he DOESN’T want Bush to campaign with him, you would’ve had a gloating post up about that.
Now, Steele will campaign with Bush, you gloat about how stupid it is.
I mean, I don’t expect intellectual honesty from someone that works for David Brock, but still.
It’s occurred to me that out of Libby, Rove, Cheney and Alito, Harriet Miers will be the name most remembered for bringing down this President.
We’ve all had it drummed into us how this President is Omerta like in his demand for loyalty. When the conservative intellectualls, led by the National Review, turned on him for Miers, it was something the President will not soon forget; I mean, did Michael Corelone ever forget Fredo’s betrayal?
So, no matter how much ass NR and the Weekly Standard kiss now, they’re shit in Bush’s eyes. This has had and will have the effect of dividing conservatives from Republicans, always a marriage of convenience anyway. The President is going to turn more insular, betray the conservatives with immigration or abortion or some other hot-button issue, so that when the next scandal hits – and it will hit – he won’t have his Amen corner backing him up. Stripped of his consiglieres, abandoned by GOP politicians who, after all, value power over ideology, despised by the populace, he will fade into obscurity, popping up every few months to hump the dessicated corpse of 9/11.
Or, he’ll start drinking again and moon the press corps. Either scenario is possible.
SF – I always vote for the man, not the party… but let’s face it – he’s got little or nothing going for him. To me… the mere fact that he’s hiding his party affiliations or at the least downplaying them speaks volumes. Acknowledge who/what you are and what you stand for. Don’t pretend to be something other… you know, like a “uniter not a divider”. Seems to me you’re saying that one should vote for the party? Right…
PSU – I didn’t expect personal attacks either… if you’ve got a bone to pick with Oliver, then do it somewhere else. If you have relevant and timely commentary/response then by all means let’s have it – otherwise you’re doing exactly what you accuse others of doing.
Funny – just yesterday there was a piece in the WaPo where Steeled said he was going to move forward with plans for George to campaign for/with him.
PSU is always contradricting himself. First, he claims the VA Governor race wasn’t any big deal because “a Democratic governor succeed another Democratic governor.”
Of course, PSU neglects to note VA is considered a red state. And he neglects to note AWOL George campaigned for the eventual loser.
Now, PSU would have us believe that in a very blue state, AWOL George is going to work some magic for a man who is running away from the GOP label?
That’s all they have ever had. Personal attacks. Steele’s best chance at winning is if he runs away from his party – Bush is considerably more toxic in MD than in VA, and for a Senate seat will be a noticeable drag on the ticket. But the problem Steele has is that the cons in MD won’t come out just for him. They need to press flesh with Big Pappa Bush to get them to write their checks.
And yes, Maryland wants a yes vote on the Democratic agenda – that’s why Ehrlich’s numbers are floundering and why we went overwhelmingly for Kerry, Gore, Clinton, etc.
It’s already started:
“Bush, however, has dug his heels in on Rove. When a GOP strategist suggested last weekend that the President fire Rove, Bush exploded.
“You go to hell,” he screamed at the strategist. “You can leave and you can take the rest of these lily-livered motherfuckers with you!” The President then stormed out of the room and refused to meet further with any other party leaders or strategists.”
It is Capitol Hill Blue, so grain of salt, etc., but there is a definite narrative starting to take place.

PSU you think we’re celebrating now?
Hell no, we’re saving the good champagne for next year! And we won’t even bother breaking out the fireworks till 2008.
