By almost straight consensus, the Republican diagnosis of President Bush’s malaise and the party’s loss in Virginia, and to a lesser extent New Jersey, is that Bush and company aren’t being conservative enough. They think a swing to the harder right is the solution for what ails them.
I’m a liberal, but I’ve never pretended that the American electorate swings to the far left and frankly I personally wouldn’t want them to. But I think folks on the right have convinced themselves that we live in a nation of Limbaugh worshipping ditto heads.
Keep that up.
Just like the pendulum in Hegels dialectic, if the right goes far enough, it’s left again.
The big story is the revolt of the GOP moderates over budget cuts and ANWR. Without Tom DeLay around to whip the party in line, we may start to see the sort of party fissures that destroyed the Dems in 1993-94.
