The West Wing debate was pretty cool, especially the exchange about “liberal”
“Republicans have tried to turn `liberal’ into a bad word,” said Santos. “Well, liberals ended slavery in this country.”
“A Republican president ended slavery,” Vinick retorted.
“Yes, a LIBERAL Republican, Senator. What happened to them?”

Who Won the West Wing Live Debate?
Who cares?!?!?!? OK everyone, let s repeat after me. It s just a TV show. It s just a TV show. It s just a TV show.
NEW YORK – Who won the debate? That was up to each viewer of ̶…
They’re sharing a refrigerator carton with conservative Democrats…
Yes, Santos was great on TV. It makes me wish the deates were truly like that… a little chaotic, but gosh you see them under pressure. Had we seen this in 00 or 04 we wouldn’t be in this fine mess.
There are conservative Democrats and there are conservative Democrats. There’s Ben Nelson and Brad Henry and other conservative Democrats who recognize the core principles of the Democratic Party and FDR’s legacy, even if they reject the liberal cultural turn of the party’s national leadership. And there’s Zell Miller who rejects every nook and cranny of the Democratic Party except the name itself.
Hands down…Santos won the debate. I agree, Willis, Santos gave a dead on response to the Vinik “dig” about “Liberals”. I am a West Wing FANatic so this “debate” was a treat. If ONLY we had candidates like those two guys. EVEN the Republican had a heart and compassion. Hey did anyone notice how the producers had Vinik give his closing statement? Seems like they wanted to get a message across to the American public in general that our government should not be taken over by rogue politicians. Well all I can say is…POINT TAKEN, West Wing.
It was compelling television pulled off brilliantly by two great actors. I saw the East Coast version and the West Coast version was apparently even better, so I’ve read.
It’s too bad we will never have 1 candidate let alone 2, regardless of party, who would ever have the balls to debate in such a fashion.
Gosh, Oliver… you must be an awfully proud member of the “Reality Based Community this morning, huh?
