Majority Killjoys

I think its funny that with their majority in the government and in the media, the cons seem to have nothing to do, nothing of real substance to be upset about. So the issue of outrage right now is… Al Franken. Michelle Malkin dissects a skit (along with her tag-team partner Brian “Talk Radio Isn’t Right Wing Enough” Maloney) promoting Franken’s book Zapruder style (you can just hear her mumbling “back… and to the left… back… and to the left”) and the gang over at MRC’s Newsbusters (when will they add Bill Murray to the cast?) is outraged that Franken would make a joke about treason being a crime punishable by death and the left wing enabler David Letterman just…. lets him do it! And now Drudge is exposing the entire thing on his homepage.

Where’s the outrage, America?

This is surely having an effect, as Franken’s book comes in at #8 on Amazon’s bestseller list.

I like Franken and thought this joke was funny.

Heck he even said that we should never, ever, ever, execute a sitting president. So where’s the harm?

  2. David W says:

it’s called ‘phoney indignation caused by partisan hackery, raised to distract the masses, and rally the base,’ and it’s the only strategy these guys seem to know.

It only takes two words to say these guys are full of shit–Malkin and Coulter.

btw, I hope that Malkin’s own little Memogate scandal isn’t forgotten–her whole career is built on lies.

  3. SaveFarris says:

    Hmmm.

Ann Coulter jokes about terrorists blowing up the New York Times.
    The Left: “That’s outrageous!!!!!!”

John Bolton jokes about lopping off 10 floors of the United Nations.
    The Left: “That’s outrageous!!!!!!!”

Al Franken jokes about assaulting conservatives merely for being conservative and about executing a sitting President.
The Left: “Hey, can’t you guys take a joke?”

    In. Consistent.

  4. Tuco Ramirez the Rat says:

Hey, Oliver. Do you know whether or not Al Franken explains his lies about Air American in his new book?

Like how he denied that he knew anything about the shady loan that the Gloria Wise Girls & Boys made to bail out the network, when his signature is on a settlement agreement between Air America’s holding company and it’s former president that clearly lists the loan of one of the network’s liabilities?

Sounds like just another lying liar to me.

  5. Actually, Franken jokes about the fact that treason is a crime and the penalty is death when everyone knows that nobody in the Bush admin faces that fate. Coulter and Bolton both look at terrorist actions and say “hey, good idea”.

    In. Consistent.

  6. scratch says:

I assume you’re also going to excuse Franken’s thug tactics:

More Malkin silliness which ignores the satiric nature of the video.

Satire is never funny to those who are the butt of the joke. It’s just like my silly fantasy post depicting the fictional alliance between P.E.T.A. and Greenpeace.

The same militancy is conjured in the imagination when Franken kicks a meathead in the balls, as when conservatives on a cruise ship run for their chickenhawk lives as bullets are sprayed across the deck of a cruise ship.

Please Malkin, can the faux outrage at the violence of this absurd human drama. It’s no more real than your phony concern for the welfare of the troops.

  8. SaveFarris says:

when everyone knows that nobody in the Bush admin faces that fate.

Gee, you wouldn’t know it by reading oliverwillis.com

  9. I missed the part where I said anything about anyone facing the death penalty for treason.

    Hey, Tuco:

Which page is this loan listed on. I’ve searched and searched and I can’t find the words “Gloria,” “Wise,” or “loan” anywhere in the whole document.

    You’re not MSU, are you?

  11. Tuco Ramirez the Rat says:

Which page is this loan listed on. I ve searched and searched and I can t find the words Gloria, Wise, or loan anywhere in the whole document.

Maybe you should have your vision checked.

Try page 45, Schedule 15.2.4., “AAR Liabilities”

“$875,000 claimed by the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club….”

Maybe you should look into this a little deeper, so you can explain how Franken didn’t lie when he said he knew nothing about it.

    Who (or what) is MSU?

  12. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Wikipedia:

On August 12, 2005, the New York Times [11] reported that Al Franken commented on the case during his show earlier that week. Franken characterized Evan Cohen as “a crook” and said “I don’t know why they did it, and I don’t know where the money went. I don’t know if it was used for operations, which I imagine it was. I think he was robbing Peter to pay Paul.” Franken had also stated that he knew nothing of the details of the loan between Gloria Wise and Progress Media. Franken is a signatory to the agreement settlement between Piquant LLC and Cohen. [12][13]

    [3 items removed, unrelated to Franken--Q in a B]

On September 8, 2005, the New York Sun and the New York Post reported that Danny Goldberg, CEO of Air America, announced that the board of directors of the network’s owner had accelerated its payment schedule and deposited the full $875,000 into the escrow account to settle the loan from the Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club. Goldberg stated that Al Franken’s signature on the agreement between Piquant LLC and Evan Cohen “was simply to waive his own claims in order to facilitate the transaction and allow the network to survive under new ownership.” Mr. Goldberg said the portion of the agreement that listed the Gloria Wise claim of $875,000 did not apply to Mr. Franken, who was not an investor. “Al Franken does not have and never had any responsibility for this loan,” Mr. Goldberg said in a written statement. “His role at Air America was then and remains today as on-air talent.” [18][19] [20]

$875,000 claimed by the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club& .

Thank you, Tuco. The setlement agreement says there was a loan for $875,000. That’s all.

When Franken said, “I don’t know anything about the details of the loan, he was in the middle of talking about: the loan.

So what’s this “lie” you’re imagining?

  14. Tuco Ramirez the Rat says:

So what s this lie you re imagining?

    Let’s go to the tape.

    Al Franken, August 8, 2005:

And about three weeks into the life of Air America, I became an involuntary investor. I stopped being paid.

So now, we started to make arrangements, and I didn’t know anything about this until late last week…

Al Franken, New York Sun, September 7, 2005:

“I am not an investor, and I didn’t see this thing,” Mr. Franken, the comedian and best-selling author who hosts Air America’s daily show “The O’Franken Factor,” said.

But he signed it on November 22, 2004.

If Al is supposed to be as smart as liberals seem to think he is, why did he sign a document and then claim he didn’t know what was in it?

  15. Quaker in a Basement says:

Hold on a second. Those goalposts were right here a second ago….

Tuuuucooooooooo!! You got some ’splainin’ to do!

Now earlier, you were claiming that Franken said he didn’t know about the loan. But looking at the source, we see that Franken was busy telling his audience about the loan when he made the statement you cited as “evidence.”

I take it we’re done with that?

Now what do you think the term “involuntary investor” means? I’d take it to mean that Air America was rolling up a debt to Franken–they had stopped paying him and their accumulated obligation to him was the equivilent of a loan to the corporation.

As for your second quote from the New York Sun, you’ll have to explain to us what “this thing” is. The article in question is behind the subscriber firewall. Is it the settlement agreement? That would be silly, of course. Franken signed it in front of a notary. Of course he saw that. But is that what he’s talking about? Your cite doesn’t say.

    Whatever.

There’s plenty of evidence that Evan Cohan misused his authority at Gloria Wise to divert money to Air America. That’s a story. The insistence by some on the right to drag Franken into it is wishful thinking.

  16. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Oh, wait.

You’re talking about the September 7, NY Sun article.

Did you see what they published the next day?

    Correction from September 8, 2005
A settlement agreement signed by Al Franken, Evan Montvel Cohen, and other parties acknowledged that the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club had claims totaling $875,000 against the Air America radio network, but did not commit any party to the payment of those claims. A front-page story in yesterday’s New York Sun misstated the terms of the agreement. The name of Mr. Franken’s radio program is “The Al Franken Show.” Yesterday’s story incorrectly cited a previous name for his program.

  17. Quaker in a Basement says:

The New York Sun article–the uncorrected original–confused two different agreements. One is the settlement agreement that Franken signed. That agreement, as you pointed out, lists the $875,000 loan as a liability, but with no other details. It’s essentially a balance sheet.

There is also, apparently, an agreement between the owners of Air America, Gloria Wise, and the New York Department of Investigations for the repayment of that money.

These are two entirely separate things.

Has Al Franken seen the repayment agreement? Should he? Beats me. But the “evidence” you’ve been waving around doesn’t do anything to prove that he has.

  18. Tuco Ramirez the Rat says:

Maybe you can explain what the following means, because I sure don’t get it:

…but did not commit any party to the claims.

Let’s see, Gloria Wise is owed $875,000, but we don’t know who owes it to them? Maybe Rush Limbaugh owes Gloria Wise the money, but someone just decided to put it into an Air America settlement agreement, doh!

By the way, how does this explain away the question at the end of my last post?

  19. Semanticleo says:

    Tuco;

Stop pickin’ gnat shit out of flea crap. It is a diversionary tactic which resembles my adolescent son pointing out his brother’s more minor infractions, to avoid responsibility for his own misdeeds.

No, I mean this thread, but higher up. I have at two posts that are stuck waiting for moderation.

  21. Tuco Ramirez the Rat says:

    The thread above?

That’s “The Broken Record President,” and I don’t see anything about Franken in there.

In other words, I can’t find any substantive way to defend Franken, so I’ll make shit up.

  23. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Sorry, Tuco.

Replies abound in the thread above, but somehow I keep triggering the moderation mode.

  24. Quaker in a Basement says:

There they are. See 11:49 and 2:38.

  25. Semanticleo says:

In other words, I can t find any substantive way to defend Franken, so I ll make shit up.

Wrong. I feel no need to defend the gnat shit you’re pursuin’ as you ‘whistle’
through the graveyard of Bushco ethics Inc.

  26. Tuco Ramirez the Rat says:

Wrong. I feel no need to defend the gnat shit you re pursuin as you whistle
through the graveyard of Bushco ethics Inc.

Translation: While I’m waiting and hoping against hope that something will happen to acknowledge that my hatred for “Bushco ethics Inc.,” is justified, I refuse to discuss any other issue, particularly one that might show that one of my liberal touchstones is a lying liar.

  27. Semanticleo says:

Waiting for the “dead-Enders” to acknowledge Nixon ethics Inc found wanting 30 years after removal from office. Will continue to wait for conservatives to require the same ethics of themselves that they require of others.
