Cheney’s Office Is a Focus in Leak Case

As the investigation into the leak of a CIA agent’s name hurtles to an apparent conclusion, special prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald has zeroed in on the role of Vice President Cheney’s office, according to lawyers familiar with the case and government officials. The prosecutor has assembled evidence that shows Cheney’s long-running feud with the CIA contributed to the unmasking of operative Valerie Plame.

In grand jury sessions, including with New York Times reporter Judith Miller, Fitzgerald has pressed witnesses on what Cheney may have known about the effort to push back against ex-diplomat and Iraq war critic Joseph C. Wilson IV, including the leak of his wife’s position at the CIA, Miller and others said. But Fitzgerald has focused more on the role of Cheney’s top aides, including Chief of Staff I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, lawyers involved in the case said.

Where has our vice president been lately? I haven’t seen him for a while now.

MORE: Apparently according to the NY Daily News, a senior admin official has flipped for the special prosecutor. Is this the 21st century John Dean?

“This memorandum addresses the matter of how we can maximize the fact of our incumbency in dealing with persons known to be active in their opposition to our Administration, Stated a bit more bluntly how we can use the available federal machinery to screw our political enemies.”

It’s dirty tricks, all over again.

E.J. Dionne: “The old conservative talking points are now inoperative.”

>> Can anyone explain how/why the New York Times has totally kicked the can on this story?

>> Jeralyn on Fitzgerald’s choice of location and what it probably means

  1. Either way, I’ll bet my bottom dollar Fitz has got a nice pile of True Bills just waiting to be handed out for an early Halloween.

Could this whole thing be a CIA operation to pay back Cheney for all his arm twisting at the agency? I mean, as long as there is gonna be speculation about this rumor and that. It all sounds too fishy to me. Could be another planted story like the one Rather fell for. Could be a plan to make Cheney look like he’s gonna do a perp walk; then “Surprise!!!! See Cheney didn’t do nothin’!

The bad ol’ liberal media set him up for a fall, but it didn’t happen. Did it?

Then Rove and Libby garner some sympathy on the coattails of Cheney, and Bush rebounds in the polls.

    Nah! That’s plain crazy. Or……….?

  3. Don’t count the chickens before they’re hatched.

  4. I feel dizzy…like my country is coming back to me…all too fast. Can it be? Will truth win out in the end?

Be still, my beating heart. The suffocating grip of these dark crony capitalists is slipping. Do you hear that sound? Sunlight is burning away cackling shadows…Justice is coming…to the U.S.A.

  5. I get the disinct sense that this boils down to a behind-the-scenes war between Bush’s team and Cheney’s team. It’s one or the other going down.

This whole Bush presidency is just a front for Cheney’s office. Cheney was the operations man, Bush does eat n’ greets. In the run-up to Iraq, Ole’ Dick thought it best to muzzle the C.I.A., so he burns Mrs. “Flame” right before their eyes.

But you can’t spook a Spook. Someone flipped. Or they’ve been helping Fitz since the beginning. Rove cuts his losses and fingers Tricky Dick 2.0. Turdblossom comes out smelling like…roses.

Bush will do what he does best…play dumb.
