The Video iPod

The new video iPod looks really cool. I think I know what I want for Xmas. My question is – if you format your videos in the iPod video format, and create a podcast-style RSS feed with the video as the enclosure – will that work?

Because if so, awesome.

UPDATE: FYI, I think that will work based on messing around in the new iTunes – what it means is, someone can subscribe to your feed in itunes, you create a video, and when they sync their ipod, the new video goes to their ipod. I wonder if CNN or Fox will jump on this first for their news updates?

Based on early reports from friends at Apple engineering – yep, that’ll work.

You bet your sweet patootie that the MSM outlets will (slowly) leap on this as another means to get eyeballs and ears on their content (and ads).

On the announcement, I just bought 100 more shares in sex.com, as well as in podsex.com.

    An interesting story concerning I-Tunes:
Check out Rollingstone.com for more details

Major labels like EMI and Sony are putting copyrighted codes on thier CD’s and merchandise so that they cannot be ripped to an I-pod. I think other companies are following suit. This problem has to do with Apple refusing to use a specific copyright infrigment software for I-tunes and also for not raising the prices on songs and videos on I-tunes. This crap is slowly pissing off customers who specifically buy CD’s so they can listen to the disk or on thier I-pod. THere are a couple ways to solve this problem, but they are remedies and kind of a hassle. One way to bypass this is to burn a copy of a particular CD like Foo Fighters new album to Windows Media Player, then upload the copied CD to I-tunes. The other way is to visit Sony, EMI and I think Universal to get instructions to crack the encrypted code.
I do not own an I-pod, but with my ridiculous amounts of music that I do own, I really need one, because I am running out of computer and shelve space. THis new I-pod looks to be really awesome, but I have to believe that squabbles between record companies and I am sure in the case of Sony, video releases will cause problems.
On the subject of MSM using this product, while the I-pod is for entertainment, it appears to me that the MSM operate under the same set of rules as do entertainment industries. The MSM is amusing because it is about as intellectual and informative as farting contest, but not entertaining enough for me to consider it a form of escapism.

  4. New Video iPod from Apple

Apple announced today that their new line of iPods will have the ability to store and playback video. Officially they re still just calling them iPods, but I ve been talking/blogging/dreaming about the advent of a video iPod …

Not awesome if you use the proprietary iPod format (likely some copyrighted-up-the-ass QuickTime codec).

Use MPEG-4 video with XviD, and MP3 or Ogg/Vorbis audio, and you will be open source. People who buy more open competitors of the iPod (or who use Linux and build their own) will actually be able to see your videos.

No populist Democrat should support corporate copyright monopolist hegemony.

Of course I just bought a 60Gb color iPod 3 months ago. iTunes 5 would download video enclosures and it could play them, but they won’t be copied to the iPod.

ps. once you archive all your music digitally, it doesn’t matter whether you buy an iPod, Archos or Zen player–i’ve been down with iPod since the first, and believe it’s the best, but really, the most important thing is that you get your music digitized, and portable, and then you can put it on any player or computer you want…

which is what wakes the music suits up late at night, screaming and dripping in sweat;>

it’s only a matter of time (days, minutes, hours) before the latest CD encryption is cracked (there is no encryption that is unbreakable), but more importantly, this shows the contempt that Sony, EMI, and other music ‘suits’ have for their customers. f#*k ‘em–they are just dinosaurs, watching the meteor streak over their heads, darkness slowly falling…

on the positive side, White Whale, your CD collection is ready to be digitized–i’m not a super-audiophile, but i’d suggest AAC, or better yet, the Ogg Vorbis format, to convert your files to–iTunes will convert to AAC, but not Ogg Vorbis–i’m sure a Google search will reveal the needed information, and software links to help you find your way.

also, you should purchase an external hard drive to put your songs on (we got a 200 gigabyte one last year for around $200)–from there, you can put songs on your iPod (if/when you get one) as needed…

you don’t want to just save all your digitized music solely on your iPod, though–it could easily get lost or stolen, or it could break, and then you’d be up sh*t creek!;>

Before you buy this first generation video ipod, look at the archos products.

For a year now, I’ve had a $375 device with a 20G disk, a 3.5 inch diagonal screen able to record DVDs (even DRM’d ones) and any video signal. With PVR capabilities, and able to be used as mp3 player as well.

I am not saying buy an archos. Their hardware is very good. Their software mediocre as best.

I am saying that a video ipod with a 2.5″ screen that cannot record is not terribly innovative. I would wait for a bigger screen and recording ability. It is much more useful.

I do wish I wish I wish that I could use itunes with the archos. The itunes interface is much better.

Anyone use the PSP? Supposedly you can play games as well as watch DVDs, etc.

I’m thinking of that for Xmas.

  11. cypher says:

Bigger screen than the vpod, smaller than the archos, but from what I recall, it’s a weird frame rate and weird screen size and you need to either buy the movies, or transform them on your pc, which makes it much more difficult than the archos which simply pretends its your VCR.
