Thanks neocons.

How about - Some people think a stab in the back replaces a helping hand. We disagree. The Bible disagrees, too.

Not too bad, Jim, although some of them are probably too long. I'm learning too. Like I would word the last one this way:

"Some people think that character assassination should replace the debate on what helps America's families. The Bible disagrees."

I started typing & this is what came out:

Some people think we should have Supreme Court judges who let big business steal a person s home. We don t. There is a better way.

Some people think Supreme Court judges shouldn t protect the little guy. We think they should.

Some people say that the Republican plan for America isn t slimy. Run your hand across any wall in New Orleans. It's a reminder.

Some people think the cost of oil is too high. It could make us think that there might be a cheaper way to heat our homes and get to work. Their way: cut tax breaks for alternative energy and give tax breaks to the rich; our way: the exact opposite.

Some people think trading $20.00 per hour jobs for minimum wage jobs is a success. Just work three times longer. America is hurting and they won t listen. We re listening.

Tax and spend. Tax and spend. The Republicans spent it and now our kids will have to pay. Who did they think was going to have to pay, anyway ?

What happened? We re in debt up to our grandchildren s eyeballs and the economy is just marginal. We have squandered trillions of dollars and this is all we have to show for it? We can do better.

Some people think we should keep sending our money to Saudi Arabia. Shouldn t that money be kept in America? We have a better way.

Some people think hiring unfit political cronies for important jobs is ok. The people who died in New Orleans waiting for help didn t think it was ok and we don t either.

Some people think that Homeland Security is only for the rich. The poor can look out for themselves. Of course they can t say that out loud. But they showed us what they meant in New Orleans.

Some people say this is class war. That s stupid. The rich didn t tell the Republicans to declare war on the poor. But they did it anyway. By being afraid to speak up. By allowing things to be done in their name that they knew were wrong. We need leaders not followers. We need a change.

Some people think that our military is doing well. The facts are that it fought the war in Afghanistan and Iraq with the armaments supplied by the previous Democratic administration. They now regularly miss recruiting goals and stop soldiers from getting out on their scheduled dates because they can t fill the slots. We can do better.

For the Senate:

Some people think paying lip service to our oil crisis will let them sneak back into office. Tell them no. We want action and you ve sat on your hands for six years. We want someone that listens to us!

Some people can t imagine if we had used real American dollars to get us out of this mess instead of sending the money to Saudi Arabia. Republicans step on imagination. We embrace it. We can do better.

Some people think the crooks should have Senate leadership positions. We want to weed them out.

Some people think corrupt Senators should be punished by slapping them on the back and winking. We want them to go to jail.

Some people think we should wait for another Republican to come up with an idea to get us out of this mess. Do we really think the ones who got us into this mess have any idea how to get us out?

Some people think that the Republican Party model is the way America should be. The ruling elite tell you what to do and you do it. Just like Russia. That s not my America!

Some people think that you should be jailed without access to an attorney, just because someone says you are a terrorist. What a great way to get rid of a mother-in-law. If you re a mother-in-law, will you ever feel safe again? We have a better way. We re not afraid of you.

Some people think that activist judges have ruined America. The truth is that the overwhelming majority of judges have been appointed by Republican administrations. They just aren t far enough to the right for the current ruling elite. We want a strong independent judiciary. That s why it s there.

Some people are afraid of losing their tax breaks. Look your kids in the eye and say, When you grow up and if you find a good job, you can pay for this plus interest . Maybe. Just maybe you wouldn t mind sharing the burden with them. We believe in sharing.

Some people say that it s ok having China be the country that lends us most of the money to cover this debt. The minute that it is politically expedient for them to call in this massive debt, they will. We re their biggest buyer& .now. There are better ways to protect our economy. We will do it.

Some people think that the unrestricted flow of capital from America is ok. Building economies and markets where people work and buy our products instead of bombing and shooting at us is good. This needs direction and enlightened self interest . It s not happening now. The capital is going to China, not Africa or Southern Asia where it can do us some good. We have a better idea.

Some people think that lies and character assassination is perfectly acceptable in pursuit of a noble cause. It s doubly infuriating when the Bible is used to justify reprehensible actions. It s not in the Bible that I read. It s not in yours, either.

Clinton did something similar at the Democratic Convention last year:

Now their opponents will tell you we should be afraid of John Kerry and John Edwards because they won't stand up to the terrorists.

Don't you believe it: Strength and wisdom are not opposing values.

They go hand in hand.

This, of course, lacks the bite of your excellent examples, Oliver, but it strikes me as having the same meaning. Stated in your style: "Some would say that strength and wisdom are opposing values. I don't subscribe to that."

Some people say only millionaires deserve tax cuts, and its too bad for the rest of America. That stops now.

Some people say that people making $200,000 are ultra rich and despite the fact they are paying a disproportionate share of taxes, need to pay more (their kids aren't eligible for tuiton assitance programs, got two kids? Dems say scr*w you!) . Some people would give people tax breaks when they pay no taxes to begin with. Your democrats everybody!!

That is beautiful! That's exactly how you do it in the TV era! Damn...

The closest I've heard to this from prominent Dems is when John Kerry in his nomination speech said that America's energy future should be controlled by Americans, and not by the Saudi Royal Family. He got cheers for that.

Of course it's a strawman *and* a "when-did-you-stop-beating-your-wife" question worthy of any FOX commentator-- a wonderful false dichotomy on the order of "either you're with us or you're with the terrorists". Good on him; that's how you win in today's media market.

Alas, wooden old John didn't keep it up. Had he, Chimpy woulda got sent packing in January.

That s pretty funny.

Like Rove's "Liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers."

Like Cheney's "Vote for Kerry and get attacked by terrorists."

Let's not even get into Fox News' (RNC propaganda arm) "some people say" bullshit quotes...

Bite me Jay C. you smug little oaf. If you want to lecture people on stretching credulity, why don't you start in your own backyard.

I get it. Straw as in "straw men," right? It's like a parlor game.

Like "some people say we if we kill all black children the crime rate will go down ...." Oh wait that doesn't work, a real Republican really did say that. Okay, let's try again. How about, "some people say we should only give government contracts to Republican donors ...." wait.

Dang, Oliver, this game is harder than it looks.

Some people think we ought to let old people die in floods, I think that s wrong.

That's pretty funny. I would LOVE to see the Democrats use that.

Keep it up Oliver. You'll remain in the minority for a long, long time with that strategery.

Why is it wrong to think Zarqawi and his followers would be able to control large portions of Iraq?

It may be 'embarassing' as Klein says; But it worked in the past. At this point
(37%) Bush almost has nothing to lose. He has the bully pulpit and the press run to him anytime he wants to drone the monotone.
