So What, He Did It On Accident?

Karl Rove’s lawyer seems to really love playing word games.

Robert Luskin, Rove’s attorney, declined Friday to comment on the specifics of the discussions with Bush but confirmed his client maintains _ then and now _ he did not engage in an effort to disclose Plame’s identity.

Rove has told a grand jury he first learned of Plame’s work for the CIA from news reporters and then discussed it with Novak and Cooper.

“Did Karl purposely set out to disclose Valerie Plame’s identity in order to punish Joe Wilson for his criticism? The answer is, ‘No,’” Luskin said. “That was his answer in July 2003 and in October 2003 (when he first testified.) And it remains his answer today.”

So did it go like this?

ROVE: I got a real hot tip for ya.
REPORTER: Do tell.
ROVE: President Bush is totally down with no child left behind…
REPORTER: and…
ROVE: Nothing. I mean, Valerie Plame is an undercover secret agent and the husband of the Joe Wilson guy who’s making us look dumb.
REPORTER: Really!
ROVE: Er.. did I say that? I meant to say… er… we have the votes, yeah, that’s it. Whoopsie. Do over.

  1. scratch says:

“Joe Wilson was recommended for the trip by his wife.”

That’s all it took. The jury can sort out the details.

A recommendation on its own doesn’t make things happen. If it were, anybody could get into grad school.

Not sure of your point BD…mine is that the quote above (if anyone actually said it) was enough to lead to more detailed reporting, without rising to the level of knowingly “outing” a covert agent.
