Matty is correct. Bush and Cheney’s people did this; it’s very unlikely they did it without the knowledge of either Bush or Cheney.
And those who would claim Bush and/or Cheney had nothing to do with it–well, there’s a simple test. When this whole business flared up, Bush said he was eager to find out the facts and to punish the guilty parties. Yet, when certain guilty parties (Rove, Libby, etc) admitted their part in the affair–Bush did nothing.
[...] Or until it comes out that Bush was involved, I guess, which is still a possibility. (via Oliver Willis)

Of COURSE Bush & Cheney were involved. We’ve all known that since day 1. If there are any smear campaigns going on around the White House, those two are either orchestrating them or at least keeping close watch over their subordinates as they pull them off.
The big question is whether Fitzgerald is going to do anything about it. He might be getting cold feet about bringing down an entire administration at this time in our history.
I’ve considered it very unlikely that there is evidence of the president himself being involved in this, because I assume hes an idiot and in the dark about everything and lets others do all the work.
It was under his administration. Even if he doesn’t run things, it’s HIS name at the top of the ticket. I can’t believe Regan got away with that bullshit-the fact that his followers all swallowed it shows the extent of their split personalities…
don’t forget, Clinton lied under oath…and he got a *blowjob* in the Whitehouse!
sorry, just beating the Repug apologists to the punch;>
“Could be quite big.”
Especially if it were true. That would be ex Clinton aide, Democratic partisan, George Step, of Big Liberal Media fame, making that open ended remark. And isn’t it nice that YET ANOTHER unidentified observer helps the liberals make a killer point. Ain’t Kool Aid a little sweet in the morning?
Dugger, Whom an unidentified source informs that Judge Crater is at the bottom of Crater Lake
Right, Jadegold. Bush acted like he was concerned about the leaker, but it’s now clear he was flat-out lying.
Dugger,
What would it take for yo to call it quits as a Bush apologist? Seriously. It’s beyond pathetic at this point, bordering on delusional.
I can’t wait for the day when people are embarrassed to admit they once supported “W”…and I can’t wait for the day I can point my finger at them and laugh. Oh, wait….today’s that day! HA! HA!
Here’s a Haiku I’ve written, inspired by the Plame affair:
Bush hunts for leaker.
O.J. hunts for the killer…
now watch this drive!
Mr Curmudgeon,
Seriously. Now really, seriously. Doubly and triply seriously. Are you an adult? Do you accept, uncritically, the word of partisan unidentified sources? Would a person who questions an unidentified source, who says something critical about the hated political opposition, as then quoted by a strong ex Clinton White House partisan, be only a Bush apologist? Is that pathetic, delusional? Do you have intellectual standards? Does not some little, however tiny, mental warning flag go up there? Even if you are a card carrying, vitriolic Bush hater? Are you going to be able to respond to this like a thoughtful adult or will you take the usual, sputtering foul-mouthed approach? Seriously.
Dugger, Serial S. Lee
A thoughtful adult would have written Bush off after Bush went back on his word about firing the leaker. Instead, you’ve sought out GOP talking points to absolve him. The only time I’ve ever seen you apply critical skills is when it’s in service of attacking Democrats, Dugger.
Didn’t the left claim it was Rove?
So why didn’t he just ask his staff who leaked Plame’s name?
TomY,
Well you haven’t read this site much. Or you would know I’m not crazy about Bush, doubt Iraq, and believe Hillary might be (MIGHT BE) decent is she stays somewhat center in 2008.
However, I still like to help progressives get it right. So here is your ‘thoughtful’. You said: “Bush went back on his word about firing the leaker”
Reqally? Lets see who’s just mouthing talking points.
Scott McClellan (not Bush, though) Sep 29, 2003
“If anyone in this administration was involved in it, they would no longer be in this administration.”
Bush (directly) Sep 30, 2003
“If there is a leak out of my administration I want to know who it is, and if that person has violated law, that person will be taken care of. ”
July 05 (Bush directly)
“I would like this to end as quickly as possible so we know the facts, and if someone committed a crime, they will no longer work in my administration,”
Bush’s two statements are clearly compatible and a thoughtful, non hate-free analysis would indicate that Bush did not go back on his word. His press secretary make an ambiguous statement; he clarified it almost immediatly.
Good try, but no soap.
Dugger
TomY
How do you know he didn’t? Plames’ name is not the problem. She’s in Whos Who. Her marriage to Wilson is public record. Her identity as a covert CIA operative is the question. I assume Bush asked if the corporate ‘we’ had (first) outed Plame as CIA; got a ‘no’; and moved on.
