Operation Help America

Center for American Progress has a proposal that reduces $688 billion in federal spending in order to help Katrina (and now Rita) relief efforts while still preserving what it means to be America. It should be supported.

Uhhh, $392 billion of that $688 billion is not gained by reducing spending.

Surprise, surprise… it is gained by INCREASING taxes.

Did you read the proposal, Oliver? Or are you just being disengenuous?

And cutting military spending by $200 billion? Again the left proving how much it “supports the military.”

Cutting pork from the Highway Bill and reducing farm subsidies? Now that I can get behind.

Rightisright just proves the rule of the conservative parrotocracy: God forbid we should raise taxes (actually roll back tax cuts that were unwise to begin with) in a time of national crisis when our fellow citizens need assistance. God forbid we should discontinue useless or counterproductive weapons systems.

It is not a tax increase, its ending the policy of tax evasion for the top 1%

Then why don’t they just say it? Why don’t they come out and say, “We need to raise taxes.” Why all the nonsense about “spending cuts?”

Oliver, that is just STUPID. Please explain how a tax reduction from 39% to 35% is akin to them engaging in “tax evasion.” Jeebus man. Try and defend your positions and arguments without the idiotic talking points.

Oh and here’s some simple math for you: The current rate is 35%. This move would make it 39%. That’s an INCREASE of 4%. Hence, a TAX INCREASE.

“It is not a tax increase, its ending the policy of tax evasion for the top 1%”

    Really, Oliver? Tax evasion?

For the “evasive” 1% who account for 34% of income tax revenues?

    Stuck on stupid.

For the evasive 1% who account for 34% of income tax revenues?

Would that be the same 1% who also account for IIRC over 60% of the wealth in the country?

I don’t care where it comes from, $688 billion is a preposterous amount of money to spend on “relief efforts”

A preliminary review conducted by the National Association of State Budget Officers (NASBO) of projected state budget shortfalls expected for fiscal year 2002 indicates that net state budget shortfalls currently amount to at least $15 billion. (for all States)

$688 Billion is 600 times the combined deficits of the affected states — what in the world could they possibly need with all that money?
