Seriously, if he was this smooth two years ago, he’d be President.

* I believe this is not only a great attack, but I believe it’s true. Like Howard says, the President might be a nice man, but his policies are callous to a fault and leave out (or actively screw) 80 percent of the country. And he silently condones actions in his party (even on his behalf) that ARE racist. I think Bush really does want to advance minorites and everyone in this country once they start making six-figures. Those are the only people he’s ever known and the only people he can relate to. He goes to bed every night with a clear conscience that he is helping all Americans. It’s just that it’s only the ones like him. Rich.

When he posted that challenge to the “liberal blogosphere” I realize it was just another attempt to take a jab at those of us who come here from the other side. What he was really saying was- hey, look at us! We’ll show those conservative clods how much better we are that them by raising, hmmm, what’s a good number…. I know! A million dollars. That should be easy enough to show them how wonderful we are.

However, I applauded Oliver for what he was saying. I didn’t really care if donations came from the right or the left- as Oliver said, “people left and right are donating all over the place.”

But what I didn’t expect is that would be Oliver’s last post about it. I assumed that he really cared about making the effort a success. And as the effort has stalled, what does Oliver say about it?

“I ve got the banner up on my site.”

Wow. What vision.

For a guy that is always talking about leadership…with the number of readers….and the connections…

Come on Oliver. Let’s see what you really can do!

You imply ‘collectivist’ is a perjorative.

In the context of this discussion is ‘giving’ in the altruistic sense. A collectivist is an ‘altruist’ (See Wikipedia)

The sense you wish to convey is that a ‘collectivist’ values the group more than the individual. That is simply not true of me, but it is descriptive of the Republican Party.

The individual doing the giving.

Let’s not be disingenuous here. What you are trying to say is that the conservative blogosphere is I am assuming since I’m not keeping score)
is ahead of the liberal bloggers in pledged donations.

And you would conclude from that (were it true) what?

A.) Conservatives are more compassionate than liberals
B.) Liberals are not as generous and socially progressive as conservatives.

or C.) All of the above?

Are you serious about the effort or was it just another rhetorical way to say how great the liberal blogosphere is because ‘we’ve got this lovely little fundraiser going where we are going to show those rightys how great we are?’

If you are serious about the effort, then take the lead and reach your goal. “I’ve got the banner on my site” isn’t good enough. You threw out the challenge. LEAD.

NOTE TO JADEGOLD: I’d like to ask you- what exactly in my comment or post do you consider it “carrying water for this administration.” Yes, I have some different opinions on all that is Katrina than you do, but neither of the items I wrote have anything to do with that. Though I rarely agree with Oliver, I respect his ability to use words to get a reaction out of people, good or bad. When he puts out a challenge (which I consider a worthy challenge), I would hope that he put as much effort into that challenge as he does bashing everything Republican/Bush and lauding Democrats. His skill at using words is something that I believe would help that fundraising effort reach its goal.

It’s not just about trying to repair damage and destruction—it’s about ensuring such incompetence and negligence doesn’t happen again.
