The longer these guys are in office, the more likely the we will perish by our own blunders. Our enemies are assured we are so screwed up, they will just let us self destruct.
THe problem really is FEMA…it is DOA. Local people have limited resources. THe mayor should have had police, etc, at the relocation centers, but he also expected FEMA to direct and take over considering the size of the disaster. He didnt know his own former party was only interested in terrorist diasters.
According to stories, TV, blogs, newspapers…FEMA actually interfered with the rescue of people…stopping busses, diverting resources, denying private citizens and organizations the right to help….all based on the priniciple that everyone, except FEMA officials, are potential terrorists. FEMA and the knuckleheads at Homeland Security have given me no comfort about protection or recovery from terrorist attacks or natural disasters.
THese guys are just ‘pretending’ to govern…they are the real ‘welfare Cadillac’ people. Collect the check, spin, deny, photo op, etc…
The deadenders of the Bush II-era can blame the local NO officials all they want — and there’s plenty of blame there to be leveled — but if this was the nuclear terrorist attack that the Bush administration has been using to scare the fucking bejeezus out of us since Sept. 11, guess what? There’d be no local authorities to blame. Here’s the scenario:
Birds chirping, children playing.
Boom.
New Orleans is gone.
Mr. President? FEMA? What do we do?
[crickets chirping at the White House.]
Yeah, but what can we expect when you put people in charge of government who don’t believe in government?
It’s like, would you hire a guy as a dogcatcher who didn’t believe in catching dogs? This is what the Republicans have brought us to. We have a dogcatcher who is more than happy to cash his checks every month (and I believe he is letting his friends dip into the dogfood fund, too) but he won’t lift a hand to catch a dog and they are running around all over the place.
But don’t say anything bad about him because that would be “political.”
Good question, frameone. What would you do if a nuclear bomb went off in New Orleans?
Stirling mentions we need a “Department of Public Affairs” to make sense of what the government is doing. I was under the impression we’ve had one since before the Constitution: the American people. Unfortunately, the Department of Public Affronts is too busy worrying about whos tit their kids might see on TV or how many people are frequenting the local strip joint. While we’re talking accountability, let’s hold the American public accountable, as well. Example: A community near my home a couple years ago gathered together one million dollars (U.S.) to buy a topless bar- that didn’t even serve alcohol – so that the owner would leave. Now, the town can’t even afford to service a small fleet of schoolbusses to get their children to school. Even funnier to me is that the building is shared by an adult bookstore – which is STILL there and doing nicely. Bad things happen to stupid people, folks. Remember that the morons running the show right now got to the top by climbing the backs of fellow morons who allowed them to get there in the first place. Let’s start worrying about what’s important and stop worrying about all the “what-will-people-think-if?” bullshit.
JD and frameone: We can at least bet that someone, somewhere, would be getting bombed in retaliation, even if they weren’t responsible (“Dammit, Condi, we GOTTA bomb sumbuddy!!”).
JD asks that question because it’s not polite to criticize without a full scale policy plan to present at the same time. Nevermind that this is exactly what the Bush administration was supposed to have put in place because 9-11 changed everything.
