According to Oliver, when a Democrat addresses illegal immigration, it is a good thing. When a Republican does it, it is racist, or to paraphrase Oliver, it is to keep out the darkies. So much for rational discourse around here …

I personally think that it is a good idea for whomever chooses to press forward from a principled position. Gov. Richardson seems to have a more consistent and principled position than the Gov. from Arizona. Though I am what most around here call a Rethuglikan, I do not care if it is a R or a D that moves forward on this issue, so long as something is done about it.

This is where all the stereotypes about greedy republicans vividly come to life.
the fringe of both sides don’t tackle this issue for dubious reasons.

The right for their cheap exploited labor
and the left because they think catering to them can win them votes…

and then there’s the other ninety percent of Americans who don’t want to be branded a racist but want our borders treated with respect and reasonable immigration laws to be ENFORCED.

You don’t “move” on an issue because it’s up for grabs.

You do what you think is right. Or, equally courageous, you prevent someone else from doing what’s wrong.

Man.

Someone needs to buy a clue here in the Democratic Party.

What exactly is the issue? Honestly, I live in an area with lots of Mexican immigrants, but I haven’t noticed any appreciable difference between now and several years ago. What’s the big issue now?

It’s a good move.

#1 because border security (an oxymoron if there ever was one) is a serious problem now, and

#2 because Democrats can move on the issue largely without being smeared as “racists” by minority political groups.
