As I noted earlier, the military advisors in VN during JFK’s tenure were expressly forbidden to participate in combat actions. And, as I noted, sometimes this prohibition was ignored.

Additionally, it should be noted Diem was absolutely opposed to US troop involvement, other than in advisory roles.

Still, there is a large difference between military advisors (who might accompany occassional combat missions) and the full-fledged combat commitment taken by the US later.

We also now know–via old Soviet dispatches–that the Soviets were convinced JFK didn’t want to escalate “a second Korea.”

We also know JFK forbade his military advisors from participating in combat, though this directive was sometimes ignored.
