What A Jerk

Everyone in Boston should slap Rick Santorum upside the head

Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, the third-ranking Republican in the Senate, refused yesterday to back off on his earlier statements connecting Boston’s ”liberalism” with the Roman Catholic Church pedophile scandal, saying that the city’s ‘’sexual license” and ‘’sexual freedom” nurtured an environment where sexual abuse would occur.

”The basic liberal attitude in that area . . . has an impact on people’s behavior,” Santorum said in an interview yesterday at the Capitol.

”If you have a world view that I’m describing [about Boston] . . . that affirms alternative views of sexuality, that can lead to a lot of people taking it the wrong way,” Santorum said.

You can’t do better then to have Barney Frank call him out? The man who claims to have not known that his gay lover was running a prostitution ring out of his house? Talk about being blind. And yes, Santorum’s comments are ridiculous before anyone claims I am defending him.

And running an anti-abortion candidate to unseat Santorum? If you can’t beat them, join them? Do you think that Dem, if he wins, gets a prime speaking role at the ‘08 convention?

  2. BinkyBoy says:

He’s feeling the burn as his political career hits the last dregs of the fuse.

Chalk up one more seat for Democrats.

  3. c says:

    Senator,

When you say ‘taking it the wrong way…’

  4. mr.curmudgeon says:

    I prefer Barney Frank’s response:

Barney Frank called Santorum “a jerk” and pointed out that the senator tried to use the levers of the federal government to block the removal of Terri Schiavo’s feeding tube, an act that Santorum likened to “execution.” An autopsy found that Schiavo’s brain was half the normal size and that she could not see anything. “This is one of those people who claims to have had eye contact with a blind woman,” Frank said.

    ROFL!

  5. TomY says:

I think Barney Frank is consistently the funniest and smartest guy in Congress. Personally I’m pro-choice, but it’s not at the top of my list of issues I care about in a Senator. As long as the guy doesn’t vote for anti-RvW justices, then it doesn’t bother me too much, at least no more than having pro-choice Schwarzenegger, Giuliani, Pataki, Powell, or Condi bothers Republicans.

  6. TomY says:

“If you can t beat them, join them?”

It takes a lot more than just being pro-life to justify saying that Democrats are “joining” Rick Santorum, dude.

  7. jnfr says:

I can’t wait to see Santorum lose his Senate seat.

“Chalk up one more seat for the Democrats”
“I can’t wait to see Santorum lose his Senate seat”.

You guys are getting WAAAAAAYYY ahead of yourselves if you think this seat if a gimme for Democrats.

I mean, I’m personally not gonna vote for the guy, but considering that he won in 2000 despite the fact that Gore won PA says something for him.

Plus, if you’re looking at all those polls that show Casey beating him, consider that about six months before the Democratic Guv primary in 2002, Casey was leading Rendell by about 12 points. The fact that Casey is running for the Senate, rather than re-election as Governor, obviously shows you how that turned out.

  9. Frank_D says:

Apparently, only conservatives are capable of “creating an atmosphere” of _____________ (fill in the blank with something negative).

Don’t you hate it when your pet theories come back to bite you?

  10. yellowyeyes says:

From Tom Reilly AG of MA. Something more dems should say more often (via Boston Globe)

A 2003 investigation by Attorney General Thomas Reilly found that at least 1,000 children were abused by more than 235 priests and church workers between 1940 and 2000. And the archdiocese has paid out more than $120 million to settle abuse claims since 1950.

Reilly, a Democratic candidate for governor, also criticized Santorum on Wednesday. “For him to equate liberalism with child abuse is disgraceful,” he said. “It’s embarrassing for him and embarrassing to his party and his party should disown him.”

  11. xdroid says:

Santorum is a nut, we need to replace him with a Democrat

  12. spazmo says:

A little bit of confidence never hurt anyone. Over confidence, however, has. It’s a fine line…

Personally I think the general collapse of the GOP bodes well for PA 06. Couple this with Santorum’s general dickheadedness — however well that might play on Fox and to the WH — and I think, barring fraud, Santorum is done.

  13. PSU94 says:

spazmo, Santorum’s been a dickhead since 1990–and probably before that–but he keeps winning elections.

As far as your “barring fraud” comment, I live in Philly. Believe me, if you want a Democrat to win, you better hope they don’t “bar fraud”.

  14. Frank_D says:

What I was saying is that is a very common theme of liberals’ to say that conservatives have created an atmosphere of, say, violence, that leads people to be violent.

But when Santorum says liberal sex attitudes contributed to increases in Priests’ sexual misconduct, suddenly the “creation of an atmosphere” theme isn’t so nifty. In fact, Santorum is a “nut”, a “dickhead”, and, of course, a “jerk” for even suggesting it.

  15. ewk says:

Frank WTF are you talking about? People calling out Santorum aren’t saying that Conservatives caused the sex abuse scandal. They are saying that politics have nothing to do with it, other than the internal church politics that kept them moving the offenders from parish to parish ignoring the problem.

Liberal attitudes in Boston also have nothing to do with it, seeing as how priests were abusing children all over the world, from liberal Boston to Conservative Ireland.

Sheesh, do you just knee-jerk defend any Conservative and attack Oliver for whatever he writes?

  16. TomY says:

Hey Frank, remember when you created an atmosphere of violence a few days ago?

    Good times…

  17. TomY says:

Hmm, Frank “genocidal racism is understandable” D raises an interesting point that I basically agree with. I don’t really think overheated rhetoric is responsible in any recent cases for creating a climate for killing judges, but at least there was overheated rhetoric to point to. What the hell is Santorum pointing to, though? When did Democrats soft-pedal child molesting? That’s what makes it so far over the line that it just sounds demented and desperate.

  18. Frank_D says:

2 ad hominem attacks from you = no response from me.

When you address the issue, I will address the issue. I thought I already told you I will not be sucked into a flamefest with you, but, if I didn’t, I’m telling you now.

  19. TomY says:

So you’re saying that as long as I make fun of you, I won’t have to deal with your “racial genocide is understandable” statements or your threats to physically attack me? That’s two for the price of one! Thanks, dude!

  20. Frank_D says:

As long as you make fun of me, every one who reads this thread will learn what I already know about you.

  21. Jadegold says:

Frank D, not content with racism being “understandable,” now pretends there’s no difference between a Senator saying a liberal area created the Catholic Church’s sex abuse scandal and liberals offering that conservative hatespeech can create an atmosphere of violence.

Unfortunately for Santorum and Frank, the sex abuse scandal afflicting the Catholic Church isn’t confined to MA. In fact, it’s a scandal that spans the entire US and most of Europe, as well. Virtually every diocese in the US has been rocked by the scandal.

  22. Frank_D says:

Racism is understandable by those who understand it. Those who don’t should get off these threads, and read a few books.

  23. TomY says:

    Dear diary:

today I went to the Democratic messageboard to spread the Good News about Bill Clinton the rapist, liberalism causing children to be molested, genocide against Muslims being an understandable response to terrorism, and John Kerry inventing his purple hearts, and you know what? I didn’t make a single friend.

Those Democrats were just too shrill. Why can’t everyone be as thoughful and reasonable as Glenn Reynolds?

    yours in civility,

    Frank D

  24. Frank_D says:

Using my name in your lame, fake post is truly juvenile…

1)Bill Clinton, IMO, is a rapist

2)I never said liberalism caused children to be molested (perhaps living in your neighborhood may cause children to be molested — I don’t know)

3)I never said genocide against Muslims was an understandable response to terrorism (get your accusations sorted out — on another thread you said “Arabs”)

    4) I never said John Kerry invented his purple hearts (although I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that he did — if his records are ever released)

    That GED isn’t getting you too far around here. Go read some books. They keep them in the L – I – B – R – A – R – Y.

Go down stairs and ask your Mommy how to get there.

If you’re lucky she may give you a ride.

  25. TomY says:

    3) the quotes we were discussing from the very begining of that thread were about people wanting to see all arabs and all muslims exterminated as a response to terrorism. Your response, your natural reaction to such statements, was to describe them as understandable. You empathized with the racists. You felt the pain of the genocidal bigots. Anyone can go back and see for themselves. I’d be happy to go to the library — can your apologies for genocide be found there, too?
