I love the Boston Globe’s editorial on Karl Rove
IT’S TIME for President Bush to take Karl Rove to the woodshed and show him the ax. And if Bush doesn’t get better answers than the public has, he should use the ax.
Again, the “answers” need to come from Judith Miller. SHE’s the one sitting in jail because she won’t reveal the name of her source.
If Karl Rove is her source, why doesn’t she simply say so? No one is stopping her. Rove has already signed a form okaying the public release of his conversations with reporters about Joseph Wilson. That’s how Newsweek got a copy of Matt Cooper’s email notes.
Right now I’d say it’s about 100 to 1 that Rove isn’t her source.
And if she talks, * poof * the Rove consipracy evaporates.
At the very least, I want to hear Bush have to explain that though he said that he would fire the leaker, this particular leaker should not be fired. And it’s good to see the corrupt, immoral smear machine side of the Bush White House stain the macho, honest, plain-talkin’, clear-your-own-brush image they’ve so carefully crafted.
Soo unlike the Clinton Gang — I mean administration
Oliver,
It will never happen because this Administration is into Costra-Nostra ways of life. La Familia forever. (Cue music…)
Oliver (or any other “reality-based” person here), help me please:
It appears Joe Wilson-Plame is throwing his support behind Judith Miller’s decision to suffer jail instead of reveal her source.
Uh … why?
Wasn’t Joe crusading against the leak of his wife’s name? If Miller can clear up the controversy and send the guilty party to jail instead of herself, why protect the guilty party? And why is Wilson applauding Miller for protecting the guilty party?
Ocham’s Razor says Miller’s source is Wilson himself. That Rove really IS an evil genius!
She is not answering for the same Costra Nostra principles. Granted the Clinton’s did run at times a mob-like ideal of protection, but this wasn’t over human lifes and war. Judith Miller from the New York TImes? Just watch the Godfather, what happens to those who go to jail and keep thier mouths shut: made men/women. I can’t wait for her to pimp “I am a pure journalist with integrety” angle. Wait and see 5 years from now, and see what this lady is doing. Plus I will not be suprised that Douche Bag of Liberty Roberty Novak is not in jail because he snitched. You think his old ass is going to jail for the Republicans?
Um, because he’s not?
Nowhere in Wilson’s statement does he voice any approval of Miller’s withholding information. He says she’s “collateral damage” resulting from the Bush administration’s policies of secrecy and political payback.
And perhaps Mr. Occam needs to take the strop to that razor. Miller doesn’t have a “source” in the same sense as Cooper, because she never wrote a story on the subject. It’s likely that she’s been subpoenaed for one of two reasons: 1) the prosecutor examined White House phone logs and found she had a conversation with White House officials during the time of the leak, or 2) another witness has named her before the grand jury. Neither of these situations would implicate Mr. Wilson.
Mike,
Good point. I also understand that Cooper has sources (plural) re Wilson.
I wonder if Rove isn’t playing this for all its worth. He’s got the oppostion mob in town square with the rope and the hoss. They’ll look so much worse if they have to back down from that vantage point than if it wre just a calm information interchange.
Dugger
If she doesn’t have a source to protect, why is she refusing to testify before the Grand Jury, opting for contempt of court and jail instead?
There must be loads of journalists who show up in the White House phone logs on a daily basis. Unless every single one was subpoeaned and she was the only one who wouldn’t testify, there has to be more than simply the appearance of her name. And even if someone else named her, who would she be protecting by not testifying? If Rove named her as someone he spoke with, in his Grand Jury testimony, she would have no reason to protect him or her conversations with him, if any, absent a source to protect.
The only way her contempt would make sense to me is if she was named before the Grand Jury by someone other than Rove and for whatever reason she IS protecting a source that is not Rove.
Regardless of what Rove did or didn’t do, there is another piece of the puzzle than clearly involves Miller.
That’s the question we’re all asking.
Rove has already signed a form okaying the public release of his conversations with reporters about Joseph Wilson. That s how Newsweek got a copy of Matt Cooper s email notes.
Two sentences. Two falsehoods.
Jadegold,
Guess you missed Newsweek this weekend?
“Luskin told NEWSWEEK that Rove never knowingly disclosed classified information and that he did not tell any reporter that Valerie Plame worked for the CIA. Luskin declined, however, to discuss any other details. He did say that Rove himself had testified before the grand jury two or three times and * SIGNED A WAIVER * authorizing reporters to testify about their conversations with him. He has answered every question that has been put to him about his conversations with Cooper and anybody else, Luskin said.” (emphasis mine)
And last week, Fox News reported:
“Matthew Cooper of Time magazine and Judith Miller of The New York Times have both refused to name their source before a grand jury in the investigation of the leak, which is believed to have come from within the Bush administration&
“In court papers, Fitzgerald (the prosecutor) said the source has since WAIVED CONFIDENTIALITY, giving the reporters permission to reveal where they got their information.
“The prosecutor did not identify the reporters source, nor did he specify whether the source of each reporter was the same person.” (emphasis mine)
Of course a few days later Cooper made his notes public. Judith Miller has refused to do so, and sits in a jail cell.
If Rove gave both Miller and Cooper the same information, which (based on Cooper’s notes) did NOT include the name VALERIE PLAME, then obviously another source gave Miller an actual name. Having proof that somebody other than Rove was the leaker would make the Democrats look pretty stupid.
And remember, the New York Times has consistently argued that Judith Miller never committed a crime. If it turns out that Miller and Rove are involved together, isn’t it a bit inconsistent to argue that Rove is a criminal but Miller is not?
Rove will resign right after Brit Hume…
Heh
Is that before or after Tom Delay resigns?
Let’s see: If Tom resigns twice as slowly as Brit, and Karl resigns one and one – half times as quickly as Tom, and Tom doesn’t resign at all, and another Republican wins in 2008 (I’m rootin’ for Rice), when will Oliver fold this ‘blog?
Now there’s a shocker.
