On the allegedly liberal CNN, this is just pathetic
The “Strategy Session” segment on the July 11 edition of CNN’s Inside Politics featured former Motion Picture Association of America president Jack Valenti — who was ostensibly representing the Democratic point of view — wondering what the “big deal” is about the Valerie Plame case. As Media Matters for America has previously noted, Valenti has not worked in partisan politics in nearly four decades; it showed here, as his comments were representative of neither a typical Democratic viewpoint nor of reality.
Which republican referred to the President as a cartoon character?
I seem to remember a lot of “Bubba” references. When they weren’t calling him a rapist, that is.
Yes, because Lord knows no Republicans have ever gone after Democrats in a comic, cartoonish way. What’s that President Clinton, Senator Clinton, Vice President Gore, Senator Kerry, Senator Edwards… you all had something to say???
VALENTI: “… I’m reluctant to go after somebody like that in a comic personal way.” You’re right, Oliver, he’s not fit to represent Democrats — he’s a gentleman.
Frank D:
I seem to recall a certain publication The American Spectator whose owner R. Emmet Tyrell routinely called our last democratically-elected President “Boy Clinton.”
Stop it. No one called Clinton a cartoon character.
Next.
Oh, and “our last democratically elected President” was Bush.
Speaking of CNN, what do you know about the up and coming guys at CNN? From Washington Whispers:
Anchors Ahead for Henry and Bash?
Pay attention to CNN’s brat pack: Dana Bash and Ed Henry. Insiders say they’re emerging as top candidates for anchor roles. Both have been doing double duty as reporters and fill-in anchors. “They’re great,” says one insider. And Henry won kudos for his on-air roughing up of fellow CNN-er Robert Novak on his refusal to dish about his involvement in the Valerie Plame outing case.

So because there is no explicit reference to a “cartoon character” specifically, the point is moot? Your playing with semantics now Frank. And when challenged with the fact that President Clinton was referred to things a lot worse than a cartoon, i.e. rapist and murderer, you repeat your mantra du jour and say “Stop it. No one called Clinton a cartoon character.” So, to recap, accuse the President(D) of being, generally a scumbag-ok, but compare the President (R) to Alfred Neuman and were scraping the bottom of the political rhetoric barrel.
JP: I said Sen Clinton’s remark was immature. Yes, calling Pres Clinton a “bubba” is certainly insulting (if, by “insulting” you mean negative but true). Likewise, rapist and philanderer – in – chief. Both insults, both deserved, in my book.
What would I call a demeaning, undeserved description of the former President” “Boy Clinton”, although I must admit I don’t know why Tyrell used the term.
I notice no one of the left-like persusasion addressed the key issue: what is the real big deal about Plame (I mean the non-partisan politics big deal). No one. Nyet. Nada. Nein.
BTW, Bubba, at least down south, is a term of affection, often referring to a big brother type. It is not a pejorative except perhaps in the eyes of some who see any connotation of “southerness” as a negative. If I wanted to be dismissive towards Bubba, I would call him the Clint-hitler, or some immature such trash.
Dugger
TomY: How come you’re not accusing her husband of that? He’s the one that lied in his report, because he was against going to war in Iraq.
You can try to push this story all you want, but one thing you’ll never convince Joe Six – Pack, in “flyover country” of, is that V****** P**** (name concealed for National Security reasons /sarcasm off), a clerk at Langley was involved in covert ops, and / or that outing her endangered her life.
Who was going to kill her?
Boris Badenov?
Dugger1: To me, “bubba” is not a term of affection. It’s a term for a smooth – talking con man, like Bill Clinton. That’s why the name fits him so well.
By the way, did you mess up your user id, or are you not Dugger?
“I notice no one of the left-like persusasion addressed the key issue: what is the real big deal about Plame”
You must be joking. Placing politics over national security, for one.
“how come you’re not accusing joe wilson”
I’m glad to see you admit that you don’t actually care about politicians putting politics over national security so long as Joe Wilson did it first. And Joe Wilson’s credibility has ZERO to do with whether Rove should be revealing our nation’s secrets. Anyway, when the DOJ opens an investigation of him, let me know.
“never endangered her life, yadda yadda”
Tell it to the CIA, who recommended the DOJ look into it. Then tell it to the prosecutor.
Its amazing how much Frank knows about the CIA and Valerie Plame. All the Republicans seem to know what she had for lunch, what time she goes potty and her favorite color.
Imagine if they spent all that time looking into Osama’s hideout or helping recruit young Republicans for the military.
Frank,
I’m real south; country south. Chewed sour weed, ground corn to make meal, and picked cotton and put it in croaker sacks. Bubba was big brother; he’d look after stuff and fix things; maybe “cut” a bullies “butt”. I agree, however, that it has come to connote a redneck, buffoonish rube. Dugger = Dugger1.
TomY,
You said nothing. How does what Rove MAY have done with Plame, a desk bound Washington (CIA) civil servant, whose name he did not mention, affect national security? Your own words and thoughts please. To me, as I know the situation, it does not rise above “careless” with no impact on national security.
Dugger, Waste Deep in the Big Muddy
Why do they need a Grand Jury? Just call in Dugger or Frank, seems they knows her underwear size and how often she brushes her teeth, why should the GJ bother with all this other stuff?
TomY: You did not answer my question. I never said “Joe Wilson did it, too”. What I was getting at was that the Left is hot on the trail of Karl Rove, while giving both Robert Novak and Joe Wilson a pass.
That kind of suggests to me that it’s the left that is putting politics over national security: Trying to screw a Bush administration official instead of getting to the bottom of this.
Knowing more about Joe Wilson will contribute a lot to this story
Finally, (I repeat) you ll never convince “Joe Six – Pack, in flyover country that V****** P**** (name concealed for National Security reasons. /sarcasm off), a clerk at Langley, was involved in covert ops, and / or that outing her endangered her life”.
So this story is going nowhere.
On dugger’s first point: THE WHITE HOUSE EXPOSED A CIA OPERATIVE DURING WARTIME FOR POLITICAL GAIN.
On Frank’s first point: THE WHITE HOUSE EXPOSED A CIA OPERATIVE DURING WARTIME FOR POLITICAL GAIN.
On Frank’s second point: THE WHITE HOUSE EXPOSED A CIA OPERATIVE DURING WARTIME FOR POLITICAL GAIN.
On Frank’s assertion that it’s a dead story with no appeal to joe six pack: THE WHITE HOUSE EXPOSED A CIA OPERATIVE DURING WARTIME FOR POLITICAL GAIN.

Good reply on Plame. I agree, if its illegal, he has to pay a fair price.
On Hillary, I just think, from her perspective, it was a little over the top. But again, I wish someone would pay attention to her Iraq comments in that talk. They can’t be popular with the Dean side of the party.
Dugger
Dugger: to answer what the big deal is- well there is a criminal investigation going on over the leaking of Plame’s name. It is a crime because it is a breach of national security. Now, do I think this breach honestly leaves us vulnerable to another attack per se? No- but it’s still illegal, and Scott McClellan said whoever is guilty should lose their job- so apparently there is a bit of weight to these events.
Frank: Clinton deserves to be called a rapist? Is this based off of Klein’s book… or Juanita Broadrick- a woman who couldn’t recall the month this alleged rape took place… who didn’t tell authorities right away… who filed an affadavit one year saying it was untrue, and then recanted that magically a few years later.
As for Hilary’s comments? I think they are deserved. The “What Me Worry” philosophy fits Bush like a glove- no matter what happens- Bush is “optomistic.” Its a word he and his crew like to throw around a lot. It lets him get away with not addressing growing issues by saying he is optomistic about the outcome. I mean, what has he really taken the time to address in his second term aside from social security (what a flop that turned out to be)? He had that little speech on Iraq a few weeks back… a rehashing of talking points at best. As for jobs… the unemployment rate is still higher than when he took office, job growth continues to be anemic, real wages have fallen over the last 5 years, more people are living in poverty. I mean if the tax cuts were supposed to be so effective, you’d think at this point we would really be experiencing robust job growth, like say 300,000 a month consistently.
Wait, I remember the President cutting his vacation short a few months back… and there was an emergency session of Congress- this had to be important, if I can just remember……………………
Oh, it was for Terri Schiavo. Never mind.
copy and paste her full comments, then. She’s always been hawkish, so what? She has her opinion, and I disagree with her a lot less than I disagree with the republicans.
I hate this thing about the hawks, though, that they know something about Iraq that no one else does. They are absolutely positive, because of some piece of evidence, that Saddam was an actual threat, when the State Dept and many others were right that he was contained and had no active programs. They seem scared to death to admit they were wrong and just make a simple apology
Q. What POLITICAL GAIN?
A.
Getting even with Wilson for casting doubt on the “Niger Yellowcake” claim in the State of the Union address.
That’s not a gain…
That accomplishes nothing. Joe Wilson was a liar.
What you’re saying is that Karl Rove, one of most brilliant political strategists of the 21st Century, risked his career and the future of the Republican Party in petty “payback”?
Puhleeeze!
That’s exactly what we’re saying. It may have been stupid and petty, but that’s how these people operating. But perhaps if you draw out the word ‘please’ with some extra syllables it will invalidate that characterization, so I suggest trying that.
