As usual, the righties have got their panties in a bunch because that mean old Hillary Clinton told the truth
“I sometimes feel that Alfred E. Neuman is in charge in Washington,” Clinton said during the inaugural Aspen Ideas Festival, organized by the Aspen Institute, a non-partisan think tank.
The former first lady drew a laugh from the crowd when she described Bush s attitude toward tough issues with Neuman s catch phrase: “What, me worry?”
The usual parties are up in arms. Let’s see… army recruitment is sinking, terrorists are blowing up Londoners, Bin Laden and Al Qaeda are on the loose as knowledgeable Iraqis talk civil war, the deputy White House chief of staff leaks information about CIA agents to the press… and the President’s response is to play dressup in front of a handpicked crowd.
Yeah, Hillary Clinton and her “facts”. How dare she!
On the other hand, we could call it a mature analysis of the problems facing America, combined with sensible alternatives. Too bad it wasn’t either of those things.
I hope Alfred Nueman doesn’t sue Hillary for defaming his character.
Well, its more of an on-spot opinion, as comparing anything rarely results in an absolute “fact”.
Just predicting what Dugger and Vince will be whining about in

Forgive a presumptuous question…but I really don’t see Oliver’s point, so, what is it?
There’s no comparison in the article between Hillary’s “Me Worry?” quip and Bush’s dumbass joke, nor would it make sense to compare the two when this Captain, for all Oliver knows, thought Bush’s joke equally reprehensible.
I don’t get it. Captain’s point was easy – the stats (at least on energy and oil; the employment stats look pretty fast and loose) that Hillary used are inaccurate. Oliver’s point sounds like this:
Hillary made a good and accurate joke. The Right is angry, which shows how hypocritical they are, since they thought Bush’s joke was okay.
Given that no conservative has ever defended Bush’s joke while denouncing Hillary’s, and especially that no hypocrisy of that type exists anywhere in Cap’s article, I must be missing something. Someone please tell me.
Hillary just went to the bottom of the list of possible Supreme Court judges right below Ted Kennedy.
Wait, wait, Bush wanders around the stage “those WMD’s gotta be around here somewhere” for a few REALLY cheap disgusting laughs, but when Hillary does it its bad?
I’m so sorry you don’t see the humor in it, I think the comparison was pretty on the spot. “What, me worry?” is a perfect assessment of what the Administration is doing, putting on a friendly face and spinning as quickly as possible to deflect any possible mention of guilt.
But hey, I was right in my first comment above, it just took you a few more minutes to get to it than I thought.
Captain Cubicle?
WRT?
English, please.
Captain Cubicle is angling for a job away from the call center; he dearly wants to climb aboard the rightwing “thinktank” gravy train.
Did anyone catch Captain Cubicle’s sleight-of-hand WRT unemployment? The fact his dimwitted readers didn’t call him on it really reflects poorly on them. Of course, Captain Cubicle obviously hasn’t much respect for his little mateys if he’s willing to foist such a disingenuous factoid like that.
Bush could nominate Alfred E. Nueman for the Supreme Court and most Republicans would blindly support him.
We are manufacturing your burger would you like us to assemble some fries with that?
That was me making that comparison, but I can understand the confusion, afterall Binkyboy does read a lot like Oliver Willis in that they both don’t start with the letter Z.
Calling Clinton’s comment “insane” is fairly radical and useless to the discussion. The Capt’ns argument that the economy is soaring leaves a lot to be desired for those in the US that have taken large hits in their income, and for those of us in the technical industry finding work can be quite difficult.
Not being able to hear Senator Clinton’s comments, I would almost doubt that she said trillion and instead said billion, or at the least, thats what she meant to say. Asking her to clarify might have been a useful thing to do, instead of just calling her insane, but hey, thats not very good press, is it?
Cap resorted to needless namecalling and threw out facts and figures that ignore the reality of the situation for Americans that ran out of time on unemployment or have taken jobs for much less than they were making before. Average income across America, after removing the top 1% of earners is down a significant amount, and the Bush Administration changing service industry jobs to “manufacturing” is about as dishonest as possible.
Alfred E. Neuman is the nicest thing I’ve heard George Bush called in ages. He should be grateful….it’s a big step up!
Sure miss the days when we could post an image. Try What, me worry?
Context, Senator, context!
Captain Ed has posted about Hillary Clinton’s statements about the cost of oil fluctuations to the economy, and proceeds to engage in some debunking. He’s right, and here’s why.
It actually hurts Hillary more than it helps. The left wing haters, to whom such a remark would appeal, will vote for her against a R – no matter what. There is a very small group of real swing voters and harsh nasty rhetoric will be a turn-off to them. Hillary could easily be the president, but her handlers need to tell her to that she can just as easily lose via that kind of idiocy.
Dugger
Like the idiocy of President Bush parading soldiers out (for political points)who publicly speak in support of Bush and the War, yet when a soldier(recently) spoke his displeasure of being in Iraq, he will be arrested. THat is more farsical than ol’ Alfred could ever dream. Duggie, you have to admit that if you take Bush’s face and “Superstar” Condi’s teeth, you have a perfect Alfred E. Nueman.
She should have stuck to something safer…like jokes about jerking off horses.
White Whale
Actually I do think the caractiture is funny. But Hillary should not be involved. Maybe she did that to deflect from the pro-Iraq statement she made at the same time. I bet you some leftist circles were paying attentiona and didn’t like it. She said we would have to stay the course until Iraq can govern itself peacefully.
Dugger, A Conservative’s Lot is Not a Happy One
Dugger,
Granted that may piss off those in certian left wing circles, but I find it so indearing that you would care so much for Mrs. Clinton:). IF she runs for president, I’ll make sure I send you a customized sticker. You do want a strong women in the White House right?
“You do want a strong woman in the White House right?”
Yeah, unfortunately, someone that lets her husband chronically cheat on her and doesn’t do anything about it because she’s so insecure about her own abilities that she has to ride his coattails doesn’t count as strong.
White Whale,
If you’ve been around here for a while, you will note that I’m generally not very hard on Hillary. To me she’s much more preferable than the Dean side. I once said that if she keeps moving rightward, I might consider voting for her – especially if we keep running big spending Rs.
Dugger
So a centrist or center left would suit you? And the strong woman part was a joke. I’ll vote for a women or a minority just so we end this madness of the “white men only” club. If the next presidency is as bad as this one, then I will be convinced that Koko the gorilla could run a country.
Frank_D:
Nice fanzine. Your still missing the floating hearts on the webpage. That would be super!
LMFAO! How? Because she went to a good university? Look, I really wanted Wesley Clark to have a chance at the presidency, but alas he is not Eisenhower so he has to pay his due. She plays piano, she went to an ivy league school, but beyond that nothing. Plus this country is prejuduced enough that you should not get your hopes up. Lets first get a women in the White House then maybe America can accept a black/minority man or minortity women. I wish we could be that progressive, but unfortunately we have to battle another front.
PSU94: There’s only one strong woman who’s also qualified to be President: Condoleeza Rice
BinkyBoy -
That was me making that comparison, but I can understand the confusion, afterall Binkyboy does read a lot like Oliver Willis in that they both don t start with the letter Z.
Nice.
Would I be in the clear if I claimed that I was reading it all in Spanish?
…meaning, you’re right, BB, I read the wrong post and made the mistake of posting a response in irritation. My apologies.
Really stupid, WW. Making that second comment before I responded to the first. Idiot.
BTW, WW, any site is better than http://
Better than what? Idiot you say? I was only making a suggestion. You could just ignore my suggestion and address my post. I feel you getting hostile, and my mom always said that if your acting sore and bitchy, its probably time for you to go to sleep:) (J/K)
I have a better idea, WW… You could have skipped the snide remark about the ‘blog I write for, and maybe have come across as serious.
You chose not to, and you are now being treated the way you indicated you wanted to be treated.
If you are pretending now that you weren’t being sarcastic, then I’ll call you a damn liar.
ABCNews online didn’t think it was a fanzine, and neither did the New Republic, who interviewed me a week or so ago. But you did. I wonder where you got that particular term for Mick’s blog?
You didn’t by any chance filch it from Oliver, did you?
And? So I should then change my opinion because ABCNews and New Republic says the site is tops? You would call me a liar? How dare you besmurch me! Frank your problem is that at your core you have no sense of humor, and I can be serious with you, but your lack of civility does not warrent my time:) Take a sip from your Kool-Aid, but on some Zepplin(?) and relax. Oh, I definetly didn’t get the term from Oliver but rather from what I observe in my proffesion.
If you think I’m a Zeppelin fan (I am), then I guess you can’t be all that bad. And I don’t drink Kool – Aid. I was a Conservative waaay before Coservatism was cool [I was 18 at the time]
I’m a little touchy about that weblog, because it’s a labor of love, and also, there are a few other people here with weblogs, and even the hardest of conservatives don’t knock their left wing blog attempts.
To me, it’s just another case of the Left going beyond boundaries, because they “have truth on their side.”
If you want to discuss Condi’s chances to get in the White House in ‘08, comment at CondiPundit
Well now I know not all is lost:) Just don’t take it personal. I think Conservatives will end up running a male anyways. Condi running for President right after she has ran for office? Nobody is that much of a glutton for punishment.
Condi running for President right after she has ran for office?
Explain?
Frank,
I meant to say serving in the White House. Refresh my memory but normally the sitting Vice President is most likely to run. In certian terms, she has not paid her dues.
You know Cheney can’t run — too sick.
That’s what opens the door for Condi…
Who’s been by Bush’s side for eight years?
Who ran the National Security Agency, an Agency as big as some American states (maybe Arkansas?) and some foreign countries?
Who’s running the State Department, and about to break about the record for first – year miles travelled?
I try to post everyday, but hunting down the news everyday isn’t easy… It’s buried, or I have to use State Department sources, and then track down the local paper. Meanwhile, every time Sen, Clinton sneezes, she’s on page one.
Here’s the word for the day, Frank: pub li cist.
But everyone else in his cabinet has a vast amount of experience and she does not. Again I point out that her experience is very singular when she is only dealing with foreign affairs. At least with military men, you can point out that they have at one point controlled communities and thier governing. The republicans best hope is to get a governor, because they always have a better chance of winning. Condi is so far down on the list. Wesley Clark is more credentialed and he didn’t even win the Dem. ticket.
Quaker: Wromg again. You know as well as I do that the MSM wants Senator Clinton to be President in 2008.
WW: Whoever runs for office is unlikely to have experience in both doreign and domestic policy. Whatever your views are on the GWOT, it is the “hot button” issue, and one with which very few governors are familiar.
Give Condi a running mate like Marvin Olasky. Who could Sen Clinton join with to match that combination?
John Kerry’s 4 months on a patrol boat hardly counts as military experience. If that were the case, I could be President. I spent more time in Viet Nam than he did, and more time in the Army than he did in the Navy (he got an early out, remember?).
Besides, I was referring to foreign policy, not military strategy. FDR’s only military experience was as Secretary of the Navy.
Hmmm. Bill Richardson, Wesley Clark, Bidden(cause he won’t win… he plays it safe with his votes.), Former Gen. Shinseki(?),
I am telling you now that most military Generals are not aghast to Clark. It would be nice for a change that military policy be dictated by someone who has actual military experience(John Kerry)
Military generals don’t have foreign affair experience? Thats more than I can say about oh… anyone in the Bush White House. See both Generals that I sited have military/combat experience and Kerry has military experience. I grew up in a military community in Germany, and I have seen liberals and conservatives, but I have never met a person who thinks that having buercrats with no military experience sending troops to other nations. Yet the process continues and you have to wonder that military mishaps continue to happen (Bush I and Bush II) but no demand for actual military leaders.
Yeah, man, I love this kind of rhetoric! (Heh-heh-heh) Anyone wanna recall Ma Richards in 1994?
I just don’t believe that theory. As I said, FDR had no active military service. Lincoln had minimal sevice.
I learned a lot of good stuff in the military, but there were no classes on how to run a country.
We don’t need a military man, or woman in the White House (but, if we had to have one, I want this one)
Frank, do you suppose we are looking at a potentially substantial challenger to Corrine Brown?
My candidate is fiiine
