Frank, Falwell is on the record for saying lots of crazy things, so you can beleive what you want. I believe he was on the 700 Club in the days following 9/11 and said something along the lines of the homosexuals and the secularists and the pagans being the reason God let the terrorists attack us. Pat Robertson agreed on air (but later apoligized). The only quote I was specifically referring to here was the one about schools, as you made mention of his comments on religious education- I noted earlier that it might not have been what you were talking about, but felt compelled to comment on it nonetheless. All your reply seems to be, since you-as a frequent commenter- have all of a sudden lost the will to point out all of my "mischaracterizations and misstatements", is "I dont beleive Falwell said some of those things, and if he did say them, I disagree but I dont feel threatened." Well I'm glad YOU don't feel threatened Frank, but there are people who do feel threatened, as this man is part of a cabal that is seeking greater power and influence in this country. You can bet Falwell and the Christian Right are fighting tooth and nail to get an ultra-conservative on the Supreme Court, now that they have Frist and DeLay on the Hill and Bush in the White House. Not to say these men beleive or agree with the loony stuff that comes out of Falwell's mouth, but they are for the most part ideologically aligned.

Sadly, (Frank_D) I believe if Jerry did not say this. I know he has said many more "scarier" things. The bad thing is that these guys have such a following here on earth. They have their own brand of Christianity.

The sad thing is that you don't even know if Falwell said any of that and if he did it could have been taken out of context.

Come on kids, use your brain, not everything that is quoted is something that is true or something that someone said or could be taken out of context.

I don't believe everything I am told, but yet I know that there is an agenda to a lot of things being said by both parties.

Don't let yourselves be a pawn in the web of lies of misinformation.

It would take too much effort correct all the misstatements and mischaracterizations about me in your post. So I won't.

I will say this: Your comment "Read the quote up above and tell me how far fetched that really sounds," is really annoying. I read it. I. read. it.

Let me tell you what I think of it

If you re not a born-again Christian, you re a failure as a human being

I doubt he said this, but if he did, I disagree, and I am not threatened at all by the statment.

Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions

When it comes to my faith, I believe it. I don't question it, I just believe it. Haven't you heard of faith? Even if you don't have any, you owe it to yourself to find out what it means to others.

AIDS is not just God s punishment for homosexuals; it is God s punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals

I don't believe he said this, either, but I don't believe it, if he did. And, again, I don't feel the threat.

I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won t have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be!
 Jerry Falwell

That's just dream talk. He should know nothing like that is ever going to happen, and you should know it, too.

Frank, you are really downplaying Falwell's comments. I'm not sure if your referring to the above quote- the "happy day" quote- when you speak of Falwell's "wish for religious education."(BTW, dont we have Catholic schools, Hebrew schools, Bob Jones U., etc., in this country- I dont recall any recent stories of jack-booted government thugs kicking in the doors and arresting the occupants) It seems to me he isn't simply wishing for religious education as he is the end of all public schoools as we know them, in favor of a system where "churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them." Horray, mandatory prayer for all students! Am I exaggerating? Well read that quote up above and tell me how far fetched that really sounds. You then mischaracterize the liberal argument for seperation of church and state by claiming we want to do away with any sort of religious display. I think you know this isn't the case, and that its a matter of government sponsorship of religion, which is outlawed in the first amendment.

Clearly, there are individuals (we have some here, they have some there ) who take their chosen Religious manifestoe ( Quran, Bible... ) too literaly.

Here's to hoping they remain an impotent minority.

Vincent: You are correct. They are spoiled to the point where they equate differences of opinion with physical threats. They equate Rev Falwell's wish for religious education (for example) with the destruction of religious statuary.

What are they afraid of?

Ooh, somebody's being religious over there... Hide 'em away!

It's amazing how the very same people who can get so outraged at having their "patriotism" questioned and being compared to terrorists can so blithely leap on board what is, quite clearly, the reverse side of what dKos' Armando calls "The New McCarthyism."

Anyone who buys into this crap ought to be ashamed of themselves. Sadly, one fears that "shame" has become a foreign word in the lexicon of today's extremist politics.

"If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being"

--- Jerry Falwell

"We have imagined ourselves invulnerable and have been consumed by the pursuit of ... health, wealth, material pleasures and sexuality... It [terrorism] is happening because God Almighty is lifting his protection from us."
"The Constitution of the United States, for instance, is a marvelous document for self-government by the Christian people. But the minute you turn the document into the hands of non-Christian people and atheistic people they can use it to destroy the very foundation of our society. And that's what's been happening."
"You say you're supposed to be nice to the Episcopalians and the Presbyterians and the Methodists and this, that, and the other thing. Nonsense. I don't have to be nice to the spirit of the Antichrist. I can love the people who hold false opinions but I don't have to be nice to them."
--- Pat Robertson

"What ... I have called a `civil war of values' continues to rage."
"Focus on the Family will continue to fight for moral values. And we'll try to keep you informed of the threats coming against the institutions of marriage and parenthood. But we do need your financial support to get the job done."
"Many people, myself included, believe that the deterioration of public education in recent years can be linked directly tour inability to reach values and show respect for God in the classroom."
---James Dobson

"In far too many families with young children, both parents are working, when, if they really took an honest look at the budget, they might confess that both of them really don't need to, or at least may not need to work as much as they do& And for some parents, the purported need to provide things for their children simply provides a convenient rationalization for pursuing a gratifying career outside the home."
"Many women have told me, and surveys have shown, that they find it easier, more "professionally" gratifying, and certainly more socially affirming, to work outside the home than to give up their careers to take care of their children. Think about that for a moment& Here, we can thank the influence of radical feminism, one of the core philosophies of the village elders."
