What’s that number?
That’s the amount of days that have passed since 3,000 Americans were killed by terrorists under George W. Bush’s watch.
That’s the amount of days that have passed without Osama Bin Laden’s capture and the smashing of the Al Qaeda network.
The Bush administration likes to parallel this conflict with World War II. Let’s.
Here’s another number: 1,365. What’s that number? That’s the amount of days between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the surrender of the Japanese to end World War II.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry Truman, two Democratic presidents who smashed the axis and saved the world.
Are you kidding? What are you trying to say? That FDR and Harry Truman supervised, administered, or even inspired the victory over the Germans and the Japanese?
It took millions of people around the world to make that happen. To credit them isn’t exaggerating — it’s delusional.
Your anti-Bushism and anti-Republicanism has been entertaining until now, but I had relatives on the beach on D-Day, my father had nightmares for years due to his experiences in the Battle of the Bulge, my uncle’s life was ruined by his experiences as a POW, and you’re going to credit two political hacks with that victory?
You should be ashamed of yourself…
That’s not to mention the idea that neither one of them would want to be in the same room with loons like Dean, Kerry, Durbin and their America – hating compadres.
Harry Truman fought in World War I. He would have kicked Durbin’s ass up to his shoulders for the remarks he made.
FDR also sold all of Eastern Europe into slavery at Yalta. Kennedy kissed Kruschev’s ass over Cuba. Carter kissed Iran’s ass for four years. Clinton didn’t do shit about bin Laden, when news correspondents were getting exclusive interviews. The Democrats’ sucking up to the New Left in the late ’60’s now have millions of Vietnamese oppressed, with their only hope being Bush’s attempt to achieve democratization via capitalism.
Typo: 23,210 Days and counting!
Oh, and BTW, fire your “best shot” — the fan ‘blog insult. I recommend you change your photo soon. You’re looking more like a smirking chimp yourself everyday.
“That s not to mention the idea that neither one of them would want to be in the same room with loons like Dean, Kerry, Durbin and their America – hating compadres.”… Well, since at least 1/2 of America supports these ‘loons’ that means, lets see….ummm…1/2 of America hates America. What a sorry state of affairs that is! ‘The evisceration of the left’ you called it in one of your other posts.
Days elapsed since Pearl Harbor and the capture of Tojo and Hitler: 2310 days and countring.
That liberals see the GWOT as simply a manhunt for one guy (Osama) shows just how right Karl Rove was.
Truman and FDR’s are leaders – they don’t do the work themselves Frank – but the LEAD…
Now Bush does lead – he is leading us in the wrong direction.
But – what is the point arguing with you – you don’t/wont like us – we wont follow blindly along with this game.
It is funny that Frank_D calls WWII being won selling eastern europe into slavery when Reagan called terrorists like Osama and Jonas Savimbi freedom fighters when he ended the “cold war” and “ended communism” (except in china, n. korea, and cuba) while selling them weapons and military training. Funny thing is ex-KGB Putin is trying his best to turn back the hands of time.
FDR and Truman won WWII. Saved the world from the Third Reich. They were right in planning and execution. Bush was wrong to trump up the case for us to to attack Iraq. Bush’s administration has poorly executed, supported and coordinated our military strength in Iraq. Period. The number 1380 Oliver brings up illustrates that this is not war on the cheap as Rumsfeld had planned. There is no insurgency in its last throes as Cheney insists. Ask the commanders of our military that testified otherwise before the senate earlier this week.
And FDR and Truman did have help..because they knew how to build alliances! Remember Allies v. Axis! We could really use more help in Iraq today. A more skillful leader would have built the necessary alliance. The One thing GWB should have learned from Bush 41: Let’s take all the help we can get! But our allies in this war are places like Saudi Arabia where women can’t drive and Pakistan where rape is part of the legal system. Oh and GWBush contracted opium growing warlords to help us find Osama. But I guess Porter Goss knows right where he is, so everything is okay!
I’m pretty sure we shot Tojo’s plane down anyway. And the count would end if we pushed Osama to the point of eating cyanide in his bunker or whatever, obviously.
And yet, when conservatives jizz themselves over Churchill’s contributions, it’s somehow not delusional. I think Rooselvelt and Truman deserve far more credit than they get.
evergreen: shove it! The left handed their testes in during the Viet Nam war, and you should know it, except you were probably educated by the same mamby – pamby faculty guys that compromised our position in RVN.
Ever since, we’ve been trying to run our foreign policy without getting our hands dirty.
On 9/11, some of us learned it couldn’t be done. “ellroon” still thinks we should have tried to enlist “the good will and support of the world community.”
“We could have had the terrorist network ripped open and exposed within months with world wide assistance.” From countries like Spain, perhaps?
It’s time for the left to face facts. “Why can’t we all get along?” works just fine if you’re a drunken driver in L.A., but it stinks as foreign policy.
I wonder how “We Democrats were tough as nails 65 years ago” Oliver would feel, if FDR wanted to negotiate with Hitler or Hirohito, or if he asked the Vichy government for their help, instead of Churchill?
In comparing WWII to the War on Terror so many things cannot be compared because of the 64 years of difference in technology, attitudes, political atmosphere etc. But Oliver does catch one thing that is fascinating. FDR was able to galvanize an extremely reluctant nation (remember isolationism?) into a focused and efficient war machine. His diplomatic outreach joined wary nations together in a single cause. Families planted victory gardens, went on rationing, did without, while the full support of the government and country went to our military.
George Bush momentarily had the good will and support of the world community. He could have done so much. We could have had the terrorist network ripped open and exposed within months with world wide assistance. He told us to go shopping. His support of the military is on the cheap. He trashed diplomacy, mocked our allies, threatened countries, demanded people be with us or against us. Then he invaded the wrong country.
Just an aside Oliver. It was approximately 3000 people, but some of them were foreigners. Other countries feel the same pain about 9/11.
Whoops, that was Yamamoto. We executed Tojo.
Days elapsed since Pearl Harbor and the capture of Tojo and Hitler: (23,210) days and countring.
That liberals see the GWOT as simply a manhunt for one guy (Osama) shows just how right Karl Rove was.
You’re stupid. Please tell me you’re either 8 years old or mentally retarded, so I can feel some sympathy for you. Otherwise, you’re just plain stupid. Tojo was defeated on V-J day. Hitler died in the final days of WWII.
The AWOT (it’s Asian, not global, no matter how much cons like to delude themselves) is not a manhunt for one dude. But I remember this president saying, “The people who knocked down these buildings will hear from all of us soon!” I actually had a tear in my eye when I heard that. It was a rallying cry all of us could get pumped about. What happened? Well, we chased the people who knocked down those buildings around the desert for a year, installed a puppet government, declared that war done and went after someone who had nothing to do with knocking those buildings down.
22,507 The minimum number of civilian deaths reported in Iraq.
25,499 The maximum number of civilian deaths reported in Iraq.

The gipper’s namesake eloquently stated of this administration, Politicians will stretch the truth. They’ll exaggerate their accomplishments, paper over their gaffes. Spin has long been the lingua franca of the political realm. But George W. Bush and his administration have taken “normal” mendacity to a startling new level far beyond lies of convenience. On top of the usual massaging of public perception, they traffic in big lies, indulge in any number of symptomatic small lies, and, ultimately, have come to embody dishonesty itself. They are a lie.”
This administration’s fraudulent rationales for this unjustified war culminate in broken bodies, broken spirits, and broken lives. The DLC crowd would have us to believe they could prosecute this imperialistic and hegemonic quest for petroleum supremacy better. It is a shallow and craven boast that needs to be vociferously denounced. As Democrats, we should stand for justice, which ultimately means we need to stand up for a complete withdrawal from Iraq, Globalization, the WTO, NAFTA, GATT and the whole racist framework of the new world order.
That’s *party* of Eishenhower, even.
I am with O.Y.E.
Frank only shows up because no one posts on his blog and he gets bored.
At least Dugger has a sense of humor!
You know, the sad thing is that there are lots of conservatives out there on the lunatic fringe, much more than there were before Rush and the modern movement. People who thought held demented beliefs such as FDR selling out Eastern Europe were rightly marginalized — it’s sure not the part of Eisenhower any more. It’s not even the party of GHW Bush.
Frank … i’d like to ’shove it’. but since im unemployed i consider everything ’shovable’…’pawnable’…. and i might need the cash.
“The left handed their testes in during the Viet Nam war” And the right handed in their brains and their integrity during the Iraq war. Seriously, have fun fighting those strawmen, Frank. I don’t know any Democrat who has a “ Why can t we all get along? approach to fighting al-Qaeda.
evergreen: shove it!
This says pretty much all you need to know about Frank D.
I suggest all us ignore his posts from now on.
Unfortunately, if one were to judge Roosevelt and Truman by the same standards that today’s “progressives” use to judge George W. Bush, they would come out looking a lot less like heroes.
Consider:
Roosevelt did not oppose the US and British fire bombing of Tokyo and Dresden, therefore he is a war criminal who is personally responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians
Roosevelt did not personally correct the intelligence failures that occurred after the Normandy landing and which allowed Germany to mount an major offensive during The Battle of the Bulge, therefore he is an incompetent bungler personally responsible for the needless deaths of thousands of Allied soldiers
Roosevelt did nothing during the 1930’s to prepare us for war; our military was so pitifully equipped that it took two years before we put anything into the air that could match the Japanese war planes, and we lost thousands of men on the ground in Europe because our light tanks were blown to bits by the German heavy tanks and artillery, therefore he is an incompetent bungler personally responsible for the needless deaths of thousands of Allied soldiers
Truman gave the order to nuke Japan, therefore he is a war criminal who is personally responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent Japanese civilians
Truman did not oppose the execution – by hanging, certainly an inhumane and cruel punishment – of Nazi and Japanese leaders. In doing so, he gave his tacit approval to cruel, violent vigilante justice of a sort that would never be acceptable today
Neither Roosevelt or Truman ever admitted to the serious policy mistakes made by England, France, or the US during the 1920’s and 1039’s, and neither offered an apology to the German people for the way they were treated by the French and British after WWI, which was probably the single-most important root cause of WWII
Sixty years later we STILL have troops in Europe! And we still have troops in Japan! Obviously Truman had no exit strategy and therefore was a colossal failure at foreign policy; otherwise all our troops should have been home by Christmas 1948
See my point?
If George W. Bush did the same exact things that these two “heroes” did during WWII, would you consider him to be a hero too?
Yes, but FDR and Truman got the job done, instead of diverting energy and resources into unrelated wars. If only conservatives would apply *that* standard today.
evergreen: How “Durbinesque” of you! Pick out a couple of words, hang your hat on it, and ignore the rest.
It was your ida that 1/2 of America supported the likes of Dean, et al, but ask yourself, who got nominated? The guy who opposed the war and bragged about it, or the guy who said he had a better way to win it?
And ask yourself this: Did Clinton win two elections by pretending to be liberal, or pretending to br conservative?
Even Carter turned out to be more liberal in office than he was during the campaign, and Ford was no competition in 1976
I find it interesting that so many people know how inactive my blog is, without going there. If you do go there, why do you go? Just to see how many people are going there? You’re not commenting. Why not?
Can’t understand all the big words? They’re only newspaper stories. I know that’s above Oliver’s “See Bush lie” style of writing and linking, but you should be able to handle it. Call your “lifeline”.
And you think I’m bored!
If you’re not going to comment, don’t visit…
Who needs a bunch of “Willis Wannabes” over there with nothing to say? Not me…
That’s right Frankie boy, whenever someone challenges you, call them names, call them stupid, all the usual ad hominum attacks.
You impress all of us with your ranting.
Frank… I’m not talking about yesteryear…im talking about today. I don’t care about carter, clinton, or last year’s election. I’m talking about today. and today, Dean has the full support of the left….which is = to around 1/2 of america. Which by your logic means that 1/2 of today’s america hates america. Get it? And as far as what clinton did to get elected …whether he acted liberal or conservative…I don’t know … but i know he didn’t pretend to have a direct line to Jesus just to swing a few votes. Now that’s blasphemy.
If you think that the people rooting Dean on represent one – half of the population, you don’t anything about US politics. Try to square that statement with the fact that he couldn’t get nominated by a 100% Democratic convention.
As to pretending “to have a direct line to Jesus,” you’re just exposing your own anti – religious bias. Bush did no such thing.
This post is more proof that Democrats would never politicize 9/11 or the War on Terror, unlike those dirty Republicans.
Evergreen was just being a wiseass. Was I supposed to be diplomatic? Why?
Yes, M’sieu Loopy, calling me “Frankie boy” isn’t an ad hominem attack; it’s a reasoned argument.
By the way, did you challenge me, or are you just playing “Wyatt Earp” on this thread?
Heh.
Hey Frank…someone said you had a blog….which one is it…? someone said that the turnout was a little low. no worry…just tell me which one it is and ill come over and fire up the troops. that’ll give you twice the opportunity to blow steam at me. I know its friday night and you’re probably feeling like ….i dont know…driving to Montreal and choking a socialist or something….and you know what?…i say do it! if it’ll get it out of your system, do it. ill vouch that you were here the whole time bitchin me out with crazy ramblings. We’re in this together, you and me. And much as i can’t stand you…there is no way, NO WAY , i’d rat on you for choking a Socialist.
You are new to politics if Dean has the support of 1/2 of america. I’m not sure if he would carry Vermont in an election. He’s chairman as a distraction, as long as he talks no one noticies anyone else. If you want to post numbers, try posting the amount of civilians that died in Japan, because of the two big bombs we dropped. Imagine if Bush tried that. Everyone wants to make reference to WW II and Vietnam, when it’s convenient for them. If you use the numbers, use them all.
actually, evergreen, you’re the one posting at midnight.. I have two sons that keep me home. What’s your excuse?
You want to read my blog?
Which one?
CondiPundit (which isn’t actually “mine” — I co – write it with Mick Wright) OR
He That Shall Live This Day OR
Family Ties That Bind
Be warned: They’re not anti – Bush, or anti – Republican. There’s no T & A, no Washington Redskins, and no DC Comics — in other words, nothing that would interest any of Oliver’s fans.
Don’t bother to comment — you might say something intelligent, and I’m not sure my heart could stand it..
The Osama Clock
Spurred on by Oliver Willis post on Friday, concerning the number of days that have passed since 9/11, I thought I d write a nifty little clock script. You can visit the Osama Clock and see just how much time has passed sin…
