Don’t listen to their claims that this book is being rejected by the right. The smear machine is getting right behind it, from FOX News to Newsmax to talk radio and yes — the blogosphere. These guys will do anything to smear Sen. Clinton and her family and it’s reprehensible.
’)
…is it possible she can run “interference” and keep their attention occupied as the real candidate makes a move…?
Obviously I meant Little Seans show.
Isn’t it interesting that while Bill O’Reilly claims he won’t promote the so called new book about Hillary Clinton. He says he doesn’t want to promote sleazy attacks books.
Well he said that a few days ago and again tonight but then he has two segments (not with the author) on the book.
Isn’t that the same thing as promoting the book? Kinda like coming in the back door I’d say.
Bill O’Reilly needs to take his own advise…JUST SHUT UP!!!
as seen on http://www.thebscorner.com
I didn’t listen but he was on Dean Hannity’s show today. Dirty water always findsthe lowest point to collect.
“True? Untrue? We don’t know. We can’t know.” Surely you, of all people, know this, Oliver.
Btw, I’d note that bitching about partisan dickery at Newsmax and GOPUSA is about like bitching about partisan dickery at Democraticunderground, Commondreams, Truthout, etc. It’s fringebaiting. I’m certainly sorry to see the book on Foxnews, but Kitty Kelly got Network coverage for her book, so let’s not pretend this is exactly unprecedented.
My experience with the radical right is what they cannot control, they seek to destroy. Doesn’t much matter whether or not it’s an individual or an institution (public ed, PBS, etc.)
Maybe it’s not unprecedented, Jon, but if it’s on Drudge and Fox, fringe baiting doesn’t enter the equation.
mickh:
I’m curious. What were O’Reilly’s segments about, specifically?
I think it’s unfair, Oliver, to claim “the right” has embraced this, as a great many right-of-center bloggers, your much-maligned Glenn Reynolds and Captain’s Quarters, for example, have come out and openly condemned Klein’s bilious smear.
Claiming “the right” has embraced this garbage is exactly analogous to saying “the left” as a whole agrees with Michael Moore’s tripe about Iraqi insurgents being akin to “Minutemen” or with Noam Chomsky’s laughable trash regarding a “silent genocide” in Afghanistan.
We both know that you and your commenters would loudly condemn this over-broad characterization of “the left.” Perhaps you could reign in your usual rhetorical tomfoolery for a moment or two in the name of consistency?
I won’t be holding my breath.
Well, I think Bill was a great president and Sen. Clinton is doing a good job as a senator but if the Dems are dumb enough to nominate her for president, the outcome won’t be pretty. Bubba, no way in hell, will vote for her. If you don’t get Bubba’s vote, you’re behind the 8 ball already. The GOP smear machine will cream her and Bubba will run with it.
Where is Wesley Clark these days??
I’d like to know which blogs Oliver is referring to when he accuses them of “doing anything” to smear Hillary. I read all of the top conservative writers’ blogs every day and I have yet to see one of them come out in support of this book. The only major right-leaning internet news outlet that has covered it has been Drudge. As for Fox News, News Max, Sean Hannity, etc., I also remember them running stories on Kitty Kelly’s Bush book and on Joe Wilson and Richard Clarke’s books. But I would hesitate to call those stories “support.”
Actually, if the press was being “fair” about this book then they would be showing Ed Klein the same courtesy that they showed Kelley and Clarke and Wilson; that is, they would make him a high-profile guest on morning shows and news magazines, and they would run segments on their news shows exploring the charges that he makes in his book. Maybe not the most sensational ones, but certainly they would at least re-examine episodes like her radical days at Wellesley and the Cattlegate scandal. After all, Ed Klein is the former foreign editor of Newsweek and the former editor-in-chief of the New York Times Magazine.
I find it interesting that Oliver seems to automatically assume that every whispered innuendo about Tom Delay is a 100% true impeachable offense, while any question leveled at a Democrat is simply another ugly smear tactic from the “right-wing attack machine.”
Mike, Drudge counts for a lot. The pattern typically is for it to start with him, and filter through other outlets, and catching on, like the Swift Boat lies did. My guess is that this would be bigger if it was 2006 or 7, and we were waiting for Hillary to announce her candidacy or her run had already started. But saying that it’s a small story because only Drudge is giving it top story status ignores how these things go.
So says Maura Moynihan, daughter of Sen. Patrick Moynihan. In his book, Klein claims he interviewed the late Senator’s wife “for several hours.” Not within the last 20 years, say the Moynihans.
Big liar.
I guess what you might say is that some of the right wing bloggers have distanced themselves, but that the right wing media machine has, by and large, promoted it.
Rush Limbaugh: “I’ve got some interesting, juicy details on this book on Hillary by Ed Klein, but I’m not going to be the first to mention them. I’m not going there. It will come out eventually. It has to do with sexual orientation, and I’m not going to be the one. That’s the book that everybody says is going to be presenting a firestorm.”
Bob Novak: “It looks to me like a well-attributed book; it doesn’t look like gossip to me.”
The right-wing spinmeisters must be put in their place. They’ve perfected the “if you say it loud enough and often enough people will believe it” method of getting their “points” accross.
There IS no “MSM” — just a bunch of pussies who kowtow to the Bushevik regime and those who espouse the propaganda.
Did everybody on here have the same levels of outrage and derision when Kitty Kelly was out promoting her book? Or did that not bother you, because you were prone to believe what she said ?
Vincent,
The one I remember (sorry I didn’t watch the others) was a discussion on how she should react to this book.
I think if you go to FOXNEWS you might be able to see the transcripts on the show. They both aired in the last 10 days.
Hope this helps.
No, only those who now defend Klein’s book derided Kelly’s. Those who now deride Klein’s book mostly rolled their eyes and ignored the scant media coverage of Kelly’s exercise in rumor-mongering.
John Podhoretz in the NY Post also lambasted the book…
Quaker,
Don’t get me wrong, from what I have heard about Klein’s book, if you want to call it one, is that it is a pile of steaming cow dung. However, Kelly’s book was promoted multiple times on the national morning shows, and received mainstream media attention for a fairly significant chunk of time, neither of which is happening for Klein.
For those of us that would deride BOTH books, there is not much room left in the political discourse.
Maybe my memory fails me, JD. (It’s been known to happen.)
But the way I remember it, Kelly’s book was pretty much forgotten within about a week after it hit the streets.
