Biden

Unlike some folks I’m not going to dismiss Joe Biden out of hand. Sure, I didn’t like him slamming Dean nor did I like his vote on the bankruptcy bill — but I have not seen any Democrat in the last 48 months on tv with the depth of foreign policy know-how as Biden. Currently the Dems are acting as if they’re in la-la land, pretending that coherent plans on health care, social security, and education are a winning strategy.
Americans want to know that you’re up to killing the people who threaten us. The candidate who is able to articulate that best will be the next president. Period.

I’d prefer someone who can tell the difference between “people who threaten us” and a tinpot third-world dictatorship.
Careful there … or we’ll end up with Biden killing raccoons with hatchets again …

The people who threaten Americans are those who’ve abandoned health care, social security, education and preferred to waste our time and money ( not to mention the lives of our children and the soul of our democracy ) cozying up to brutal puppet dictators like the Shah of Iran or Saddam Hussein ( to name a few ) in a vain attempt at a) the criminal ( and undemocratic ) extension of American Empire, or b) the strategic acquisition of land or resource ( that doesn’t belong to us ). Now, as long as Biden isn’t represented by the previous definition, he has as good a shot as any at getting my vote.
I don’t have much faith in Strauss or Biden. They represent the ‘wienie’ wing of the Democrats…walk softly and don’t make a stir. Biden will be a piss poor candidate for President because, just like Kerry, he appears as an effete easterner who will fold like a cheap lawn chair. The Democrats used to have balls…Hillary has them but she is moving to the center to get a larger base. Not a good idea. Neither she nor Biden can change those who dispise them and they will, in the end, alienate any Democrat looking for a strong, progressive candidate.
We need a Westerner, a self made man or woman who can wear cowboy boots and not look like a fool. Face it, U.S. voters are not looking for intellect anymore than they look for nutrition at Burger King…they want a symbol that speaks to them and neither Hillary or Biden can do that.
Look to Western Governors….they deal with real problems more than any senator or rep. does. There has to be someone who can take a punch and swing back. I am becoming more and more disillusioned with each election. Horseback Populism….that is the ticket, not more of the same tired, weinie politicians that the DNC seems so fond of.
Those racoons were a credible threat.

I have to agree with Boris, but I’m going to turn it up a notch. US voters are reactionary simpletons when it comes to their political lives. Personally, I think it stems from a piss-poor historical education curriculum that is mired in jingoism, lies, and whitewash. After learning all that propagandized history, the average citizen is then bombarded with the short-stroking religion of capitalism for his entire waking life. It’s no wonder so many people are able to stare in the face of the Bush nightmare and applaud it; when your faculties of critical thinking have been so thoroughly compromised, you’re prone to being little better than a sheep.
Anyway, all this talk of toughness is essentially irrelevant. The US has been the biggest dick on the block for the better part of a century; strength is not the issue, anymore than it was with the Roman Empire. The issue is, or it ought to be, how we wield our power and influence.
You can go around the globe killing all the ‘bad guys’ you want, but sooner or later your might won’t be enough to make it right. We live in a technological age when small numbers of people can cause apocalyptic levels of death and destruction, if they have only the resourcefulness and the motivation.
If the most powerful and privileged pursue justice and equanimity, then fewer people will have reason to cause such harm. Those who still choose violence will then be fewer in number, with fewer supporters, and with fewer places to hide. It may not be an easy road to travel, but it really isn’t that complicated.
Excellent point Alex – I agree with you that it is more of our willingness to be good and just then our willingness to beat up perceived bullies.
It is not that complicated and it is shocking how shortsighted we can be in regards to how we are perceived in the world.
There are those that will say – who cares how the world see’s us and they will keep saying it even after we get attacked by the latest batch of terrorists.
Doing the right thing is not weakness, it is not bowing to global pressure – it is the right thing.
